Helmets: a "Gore"y opinion

Allow me to introduce you to "Rick Gore Horsemanship."  From my understanding, he is a misogynistic older guy who holds firmly to his belief that most women and every person who rides English has it all wrong.  Bits are wrong.  Shoes are wrong.  Etc etc.  As a fellow Western rider, I find him embarrassing.  While he has it right that horses are ( Read more... )

I always wear a helmet. I didn't as a kid, but as an adult (and realizing I am not invincible, I suppose) I'd like to try and prevent any head injuries.

Rick Gore Horsemanship was featured here years ago. The guy is an asshole. I just don't know any other way to describe him. I watched a few of his videos until they infuriated me!

I've always been taught to wear a helmet and always have done. I've never had any terrible falls but I have certainly fallen on my head a few times and I'm sure the helmet absorbed some of the impact. Personally, even on my bombproof pony who I trust with everything - I wear a helmet. Anything could spook her, she could spin around and I could go one way while she goes the other (and it's happened once in the past when she spooked at a heron, of all things, because I don't think she'd ever seen one before) and end up on the floor.

i'm a riding instructor (icelandic and centered riding, actually) and i judge people who don't wear helmets. i think they're being stupid. i'm also a neuroscientist, and i spent quite a few years looking at images of busted brains.

that said, my judgment doesn't mean spit. his eventual brain damage might, or not.

Personally I can't see a single reason not to wear a helmet.

I only listened to his "anti-helmet" videos and haven't gone further. While I don't agree with everything he says, he does have some valid points-he just doesn't stop talking after he makes them :)

Pretty much this! I'm completely pro-helmet, and as an instructor, I wouldn't teach a lesson, regardless of discipline, if the rider wasn't wearing one. But don't be such a d*ck about your opinion, Mr. Cowboy! More flies with honey, and all that!
