The election trail: Part I

Sep 08, 2008 21:15

So after much rumouring and murmuring, the countdown to the election has finally begun. As someone who can't get enough of Canadian federal politics, I will be following the race quite closely and trying to predict what the start of the 40th Canadian Parliament will look like.

Each leader has started their campaign off in their own way:

opinion, politics

I've been monitoring the US election off and on, but with the primaries dragging on for about five months (followed by three months of speculation of who will be the vice-presidential picks), it gets a bit tiring to keep up. That's one thing I like about the Canadian system: parliament breaks for a few weeks, holds an election, and then the new government is sworn in after a transitional period.

Also, I can't stand watching talk shows on CNN or Fox News, which seems to be where most of the election coverage happens.

Political talk shows in general are uninteresting. I tried watching Mike Duffy's show on CTV tonight, but it was several segments of the following:

Liberal person: "My party is great!"
Conservative person: "No, my party is great!"
NDP person: "No, my party is great!"

I would prefer more "polished" pieces, pre-recorded and edited and having an actual narrative - but I guess that's hard to do on a daily basis. Basically, I wish politicians would stop talking; I want to hear what everyone else thinks.
