It's not that Jude really feels like going to a show tonight - it's just that Sadie and JoJo are playing, and he does want to be there for his friends. He's just - he's fucking tired. He wants to go home, cuddle up with Max, and sleep. He's tired of an endless search for a job, of an awkward ex-girlfriend, and of worry for a mother he's thousands of miles away from. But he's at the club which is packed, and he heads over to the bar to get a drink before he even looks for Max. He drinks his beer steadily as he scans the crowd. He locates Max across the room, downs the rest of the beer, and begins to head over.
He sees Max and a girl, and they're leaning in close to each other, and the girl has her hand on Max's shoulder, and it's all in the body language, really. He can feel his blood beginning to boil, and he wants to just turn around and storm out, but he's not going to. No. He sees the girl put her arm around the bottom of Max's neck and draw him closer, hears, "Hey, you wanna get out of here?"
Before Max can answer, Jude is there, saying, "No, he can't."
"Who are you?" asks the girl.
"His boyfriend."
"Oh." The girl looks at Max with thinly veiled disgust. "But you're both guys. That's gross." And she leaves.
Jude looks at Max for a moment as if he's going to say something - yell, maybe - but he just turns around and heads toward the exit.
He's storming out, pushing people aside, and it's not until he's outside, patting his pockets for his cigarettes, that he realizes that Max was right behind him. "Jude," says Max. "Listen."
Jude doesn't want to listen. He's had a shitty day, and after everything he's been through, Jude doesn't want to listen to this.
"I couldn't get the girl off me. I think she was drunk. And I didn't want to be rude and just push her away, and I didn't know what to do, and I'm sorry. I know it looked bad."
Jude doesn't speak, just leans against the brick wall outside the building, focuses on the smoke burning in his lungs and tries to ignore his pounding headache. "Great. Alright. Well... you should probably stay and watch the rest of Sadie's set. I'll see you later." He opens his eyes and pushes himself off the wall.
Max rests his arms on either side of Jude, trapping him. "I'm not letting you leave like this."
Jude blinks, and looks at a point off Max's shoulder. "Like what?"
"Angry."
"I'm not angry."
"Stop bullshitting me. What's going on?"
Jude sighs. "I'm tired, okay? Everything's fine. I have a headache and I want to go to bed. That's it."
Max nods. "A headache." He places his fingers on Jude's temples and starts rubbing gently. He massages Jude's temples, his scalp, his neck - and Christ Jude is tense. He finishes by settling his hands on Jude's shoulder blades, tugging him forward into a hug. "Feel any better?"
Jude nods. No matter how angry he ever is, he's a sucker for this - for being touched, for physical connection to another person. It's like a drug to him, the very best drug, and he knows that Max knows about this weakness.
"I love you," whispers Max.
Jude nods. "Thanks."
Max strokes Jude's cheek. "Judey," and then he remembers that time Jude had the really bad trip - "You could call it off if you want to" and the "You'll stay, right? and he understands. He kisses Jude and tries to figure out what to say. "I'll just fuck it up," he mutters, softly.
"What?" asks Jude.
"This," says Max. "Us. You don't get it. You don't get how fucking crazy I am about you... have always been about you. I mean, I love you. You're the only thing that keeps me from going fucking mad, you're the only thing I have to be happy about... and I don't think you get it. And that kills me, man." He takes a deep breath. "I am completely, head-over-heels in love with you, and I wish I had some way to express that to you without fucking up."
Jude smiles and kisses Max, and he can see the relief in Max's face. Jude realizes, as they stand there, kissing and holding each other, that this would probably qualify as their first fight. And they got through it, and he just feels closer to Max now, not-- not whatever it was he felt with Lucy all the time. He pulls away, and kisses Max's cheek. "Can we go home? I'm tired."
Max nods, wrapping his arm around Jude's shoulders. Jude feels safe, like he's already at home - did he become a girl just now, or something? He smiles, and wraps his arm around Max's waist. He's suddenly become much sleepier, and he's glad that Max is here. "Kitty," murmurs Jude.
"Huh?"
"You're soft. Like a kitty. My kitty. I'm... really tired."
"Yeah, clearly."
Jude smiles brightly at Max. "I love you, my kitty. Let's get home."
