As the Irish lilt of Angelus’ words penetrated Spike’s consciousness, only one thought crossed his brain - ‘Shit.’
“My Spike has been a bad boy,” Drusilla said, backing Angelus up. She crossed her fingers together, “Naughty, naughty.”
“Look, this isn’t what you think,” Spike protested.
“Oh?” Angelus asked, his eyebrows rising almost above the Captain Caveman brow, into the hairline. “Cause it looks like roller-boy hasn’t been completely honest with his sires. Is that what it looks like to you, Dru?”
“Pss pss,” Dru said, moving closer to Spike. “Looks like you’ve made Daddy angry, pss.”
“I’m sure good ol’ Spike is about to explain to us exactly why we’re wrong, aren’t you, Spikey-boy?” Angelus jibed cruelly.
“Well I… Bloody hell! I don’t have to explain myself to you ponces!” Spike punctuated his outburst by spinning around and walking off. He was surprised, and a little chilled, when he realised that neither of them followed after him.
Damnit, he remembered times when he and Angelus had sat together between flying from place to place, drinking and lamenting over the fact that they could not get drunk. Those had been the good old days. The bloody ponce hadn’t been any better than him then!
Actually, he was really troubled by the fact that neither Angelus nor Drusilla had deigned follow him where he stormed off. In the past, up till even recently, his insolence tonight would have earned him a sound thrashing.
Returning to their lair somewhat hesitantly, Spike was surprised to find they hadn’t returned yet. They had continued with their nightly hunt then? No. Spike heard noises, of the unmistakable variety, and knew the only hunt going on with them tonight was within these walls. A thrashing of a very different sort, so to speak.
