Curtis has decided he really wants to get an idiot-proof point and shoot camera so he can take more photos of the kids and/or me/us without feeling overwhelmed and terrified. My camera is like a glass butterfly to his clumsy man hands, and he'll rarely touch it without full instructions and a constant stream of reassurance that a random button push ( Read more... )

My dad is also a photographer and we were asking him about point & shoot cameras since we need a new one. He has this one for his wife: http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/digital_cameras/powershot_sx200_is They both really like it.
There's a newer version out, the sx210, which I think we're going to go with. It seems pretty simple for non-skilled photographers, but we liked it because it also has the capability to do fancier stuff.
Extra bonus: the sx210 comes in purple, so you could get Curtis a purple camera :-)

I just got an Olympus stylus tough for camping trips and trips to the beach. It's a little pricey but it can go 10 meters under water and be dropped from 7 or 10 feet without damage. And it operates in freezing cold weather. I'm hoping it will last me a while! It might have more features than you're looking for though. http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/product.asp?product=1448

Panasonic Lumix. Seriously the easiest, most idiot-proof thing I've used, plus actually flexible enough for someone who knows what they're doing.

Seconded. Ours also makes decent video.

I have the Lumix wide-angle, too. Bonus, the LX3, I believe, shoots raw.

I just got myself a Lumix after doing a ton of research. I'm a big fan of it so far, and a friend who has one showed me her "idiot-setting" shots and they're gorgeous.

I have a Nikon Coolpix s210 and I love it. It's been the best point and shoot I've ever had. The picture quality is great and the settings are easy to use, but you can still tweak things. It's also purple, which only makes it cooler IMO.

Do you mind if I ask what your big camera is? I'm starting to shop for DSLRs because my old Canon Rebel is OLD, and I've been working with a photographer friend of mine. My old camera isn't going to cut it for any type of paid work.

I know a lot of people who started their business on the rebel. :)

I have the Nikon D300.

Mine is over seven years old, and my point and shoot takes better quality pictures, haha.

Thanks!

I love my fujifilm finepix s700 - it had great reviews on amazon and it has lived up to them completely.

This what I have as well. I love it! And it was only $130 or something new.
