The more baffling a mystery was, the more interested Conan became.  But this was just too baffling.  He could remember all those weeks of believing he was somebody else.  How had that happened?  Had it been a dream?  Reality?  And if it was reality, how much did Neal
remember of that confrontation?  He kept turning all of these questions over and ( Read more... )

Kat is outside the wall, prowling the fringe of the woods. She hasn't gone in yet- she's not sure she wants to, given how many mixed scents there are inside, only a few of them familiar. This must be where everyone else ended up.

Then there's a scent that's particularly familiar and particularly close, though... It's weird. Different. She raises her head to get a better whiff and spots Danny at the top of the wall, hesitates a moment, and then drifts out from under cover to look up at him. Her nostrils flare, she squints, and then says, "You smell more today. The hell is that about?"

"They aren't protecting you," she says, and it comes out a low rumble. "We're not human, that's what I know."

Kat draws her knees up so she can rest her chin on them. "I thought I was, still. With what I can do, I thought I still was human, but..." She shrugs.

He crosses his arms stubbornly and glances away. "Doesn't matter what they say. I know I'm still human. And I'm a ghost. I'm both. And I'm going to protect them. Even if they don't want me."

He'd made that decision a long time ago.

Kat stays quiet, not wanting to argue. Feeling a little guilty somehow that she can't think like him. She looks down and away, plucking at the grass. "It's not because of what they say," she mumbles. "It's because of what I am. That's not going to change."

She looks back at him with her temple resting on her knee. "Do you have anyone that knows? Like, back in the world."

"You still look pretty human to me," he says bluntly. "You should meet my friend Wulf. He's a ghost werewolf. Kind of looks like a six-foot-tall green wolfman."

He glances back at her and wraps his hands around his knees. "Yeah. Used to just be my sister and my best friends. And my enemies, of course. Now the entire world knows."

She shrugs rather than answering, until he mentions his sister and his friends. "What's it like? Is it better when no one knows?"

Kat stretches her legs out again. "I used to go to parks and play with the kids and the dogs. Went both ways, human and wolf. I thought it was kind of like people knowing."

"I think it was. I mean, it still sucked sometimes." Nothing could ever stop the sheer wrongness of listening to his own parents discussing the best way to dissect him. "But at least I had somewhere to run then."

"I get that," Kat says. She claps a hand on his shoulder in part just to see whether or not it'll pass on through. "Well, like I said. I won't tell anyone, so just don't hang around too many werewolves and you should be good."

She winces. "Oh, there are other werewolves. So. I might have to warn them off outing you."

He rolls his eyes at her. Jazz had done the exact same thing when she'd figured out about his ghost side. "I don't have to be intangible, you know."

"Oh great. Something else to worry about." He sighs heavily. "Yeah, I probably need to talk to them. Keeping this a secret is hard enough without someone coming in and blabbing something about me smelling weird.'

"Don't know what you're talking about," she says loftily. "And it's not my fault you smell weird."

Kat climbs to her feet using Danny's shoulder to push herself off the ground. She stops after a half-step toward the woods, turning to look down at him again. "Hey, when you go through walls and stuff- can you take people with you? Or is it just you?"

He lightly rolls to his feet and hops to shake the grass off.

"I can take most things. As long as I can touch it I can take it with me. Why?"

She scratches her chin thoughtfully. "Doors in the castle I can't get through. I still don't know anything about this place, not really, and I been here how long? I figure if someone knows something, at least in the castle, it's where people like us can't get to it. They want us for something. I know they do."

"Makes sense to me." He grins at her. "The only thing more suspicious than a locked door is a secret passage. That kind of thing always makes me want to see what's behind it."
