When they wake, it’s to hesitant birdsong. Distant chirping conversation, stilted, as though the birds themselves are trying to remember how to sing in the early-spring chill. Mist crawls up the glowing trunks of the white trees, swimming thickly between them at the height of a tall man. Shapes come and go in the golden light of new morning, prancing things that might look like deer if they weren’t so large.
And if they didn’t laugh as they vanished.
Curiosity hangs in the air, the world rediscovering itself after being frozen--and watching these new strangers on its soil. Birds--too bright for the forest, too big for known species--dodge between the sprouting branches high above while the trees bob and rattle at their passing. In places, the mist parts, showing foliage that’s as unreasonably large as anything else, before it closes in and makes the world a watercolor of delicate shades again.
