The wind roars around the clearing without cutting through it, spinning the snow that lays thick under the trees into white cyclones that flatten against the clearing’s edge as though thrown against a window. The grass underfoot is gray. Dead. Withered remains of plants bristle in clumps all around the base of the arch that stands in the clearing’s center.
It glows. Where the trees are harsh white against the black of winter night-time, the stones of the arch shine in uneven patterns with the same indifferent shine as starlight. Cracked through its zenith, it feels almost like a corpse braced against the ground. A poem is carved into it from end to end.
One's for the fiddler and one's for the dancer,
And one's for the ferryman -- give him his due.
One's for the question and one's for the answer,

One's for the leaving and one's for returning,
And one's for a candle to carry you through.
