Rolling gray clouds and the soft sound of summer thunder greets the wakers. Rain falls softly on the foliage far above, making it through in drips and drizzles rather than as a steady downpour. It’s a sleepy sort of quiet, the kind that comes with the world going to ground to sleep out a storm. The colors of the forest are sleepy as well, all water-deepened greens and grays.
A broad spring flows up into a natural stone basin and spills into a deep track nearby, its sides sheer and at least four feet deep. The stream rushes out of sight between the trees. It’s punctuated by an odd, pulsing rhythm, the water level rising sharply and dwindling again, over and over. Pale ribbons of red and gray flow through the clear water. The plants that cling to the stream’s steep banks are massive and threaded with the same colors.
The roots of the trees, where they poke up through the ground, seem to make a point of avoiding it.
