[There's a bit of fumbling and closeup of Spencer's mouth and neck as he tries to figure out how to work this communicator.]

[He's confused. There's a pause and a slight change in intonation, which would indicate two speakers, but the voice sounds nearly identical.]

Some use how?

[And here's a somewhat quizzical looking fifteen-year-old.]

School to restore a sense of normalcy?

Yes. Studies have shown that after a traumatic event such as being brought to this place, it's helpful for children to return to patterns that they're familiar with as quickly as possible. School tends to be a familiar pattern for most children from Western cultures.

Western in respect to, er, wherever you're from, may I presume?

[He considers that for a moment. Most?] Most as in...most of everyone?

Western generally refers to the Western Hemisphere and European countries. And yes, most children under the age of 18 are required to go to school in those areas.

[Spencer's confused by this line of questioning. This boy clearly speaks English, yet he doesn't know about school?"]

How many children are here? I saw one in the forest when I first arrived...but I don't think you'd want her in your school.

I don't know exactly. I've met two and seen several others around the barracks.

One in the forest? She might be... one of them.

The ones that don't live in the barracks.... I was sure they were part of some kind of a cult...

[He's starting to believe that they might actually use real magic... which is a terrifying thought.]

A school? That sounds like a marvelous idea.

I'm glad you like it. I liked sch- well, I liked learning when I was a child... Still do.

[Being a 12-year-old prodigy in a public high school didn't lend much to positive social experiences at school.]

I do like school. Very much. At home I went to the grammar school in the village.

[Will had had a rather pleasant experience in school so far, apart from being terribly embarrassed at winning few choral festivals. Being the youngest of nine children helped quite a bit there, especially when most of your brothers were grown. Or almost grown.]

What grade were you in? I'd like to find out a little bit about where each of the children was in their studies before they came here.

Yeah, good luck with that normalcy thing. You're going to need it.

Sometimes the resumption of a routine can be incredibly helpful in getting children back on track after a tragedy.

There have been numerous studies done on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and they all seem to point to its verification.
