It wasn’t every day the Sorting Hat went out and surveyed its kingdom. There were only a few things that caught it’s attention outside the Sorting Room, anyways…giving gifts of cheese to those who did not understand its greatness, bombs, mass weddings.

There were rumor, though, of a fine piece of millinery work hanging about, especially after a conversation in the compy lab detailing a wide brimmed, well-fit beauty. The Hat’s straps simply tingled to examine that bit of work.

Imagine his delight when he came across that hat, laying on a bed, just waiting for him, seductively crown up, teasing him. Oh, yes, it was just begging for attention. He moved closer, his straps just touching the brim. Oh, nice, well-used material. He could feel where the wearer’s hands often caressed the tempting vixen.

Ah, what is this? A slice from the edge of the brim almost to the crown. Who would treat a hat in such a way? Even as his straps examined that slit thoroughly, the Hat found himself somewhat indignant.

There was something a little odd about the cut, though. Its edges felt finished, as if the hat had been designed that way. Only a trace of roughness at the very tip of the gash made him think it might not be design. But, it’s not like he would know, unless he asked the one the hat had chosen to cover. This hat was delightfully still under his inspections.

A fleeting thought of what it would be like to wear this hat floated through what constituted the Hat’s mind. But, it was quickly dismissed. He was always the top hat. He slid over the crown of the hat, his straps still teasing that slit. Oh, it was a nice fit indeed, a very nice fit. A better fit he had yet to find. The smooth curve of the crown was ideal, completely enticing and inviting. Bliss and bliss again.

Some knowing, perhaps the same knowing that allowed him to Sort people, let him know the hat’s wearer was returning. He rose, patted the top of the crown with a strap and went about his rounds, not promising anything, quite pleased with their encounter.
