Chapter 15
“Lex!” Lionel greeted cheerfully. He got up from the bench in the holding cell and approached the bars. “I hear congratulations are in order.”
Lex raised a curious brow, and in response his father waved the morning’s paper at him. “The city sewer project scandal,” he explained. “You stand to benefit from this mishap, don’t you?”
Lex shrugged, determined not to engage him. But his father was intent on conversation this morning.
“Your success in this matter - albeit by default - is admirable,” he said, perusing the paper. “How fortunate for you that this…this Sentinel person just happened to touch on one of the city projects that concern you. A stroke of luck, indeed.”
Lex could have sworn he heard a slight inflection in his father’s voice when he said Sentinel, but still he refused to react.
“I see my good friend the Mayor wasn’t too diligent in concealing his advantage over the rest of the playing field,” Lionel continued soberly, tut-tutting with mock sympathy.
“He deliberately undercut my bid, and that makes him a criminal,” Lex swiftly replied.
“No, getting caught is what made him a criminal,” Lionel rebutted as he skimmed the paper’s pages. “If he’d been a bit more sensible and a lot less greedy, he’d be singing a completely different tune.”
Lex tilted his head. “It doesn’t bother you at all that he cheats his way into contracts?”
Lionel gave him a condescending look. “It’s called business, son. You might want to try it sometime.”
“Thanks for the tip, but I’m doing just fine without compromising my ethics,” Lex replied.
Lionel shook his head pityingly. “Clearly, you still have a lot to learn.”
“Not from you, I don’t. And certainly not right now.” Lex pointedly glanced at his watch, and his father’s brows went up.
“Do you have somewhere else you need to be, son?”
“As a matter of fact, I do,” he replied, and clasped his hands. “Well, as much as I’d love to sit at your feet and receive your pearls of wisdom, there really are better things I could be doing with my time.”
“Surely you can spare a few more minutes for your old Dad?” Lionel asked, attempting to look innocent. Lex squinted and tried to read his father’s expression, but the man had a classic poker face; he gave nothing away.
But he was up to something; of that, Lex was sure.
“For a man soon to be facing a lifetime behind these bars, you seem awfully at ease with yourself,” Lex remarked.
Lionel’s already smug grin widened even further, and he waggled a finger at him. “And there’s your second mistake, Lex. First you equate good business practices with criminality; now you presume to know my whereabouts for the foreseeable future.”
“Come on, Dad. You and I both know you’re guilty of the crimes you’ve been accused of,” he retorted. “Why even bother denying it?”
“Because guilt or innocence isn’t what matters in court, son,” he replied swiftly. “It only comes down to what you can prove.”
“And tomorrow, we’ll prove beyond all reasonable doubt that you murdered your parents, and deserve to live out the rest of your days in a jail cell,” Lex replied dryly. “But you didn’t call me all the way our here for that.”
“That’s right; I didn’t.”
Lex rolled his eyes. “I expect you’re after a plea bargain, but I’m afraid you’ve left it a little too late for that,” he retorted. “The prosecution isn’t interested in cutting you a deal. We have you, Dad. This is one net you won’t be able to wriggle your way out of.”
“Why are you so confident that I’ll be convicted tomorrow, Lex?” Lionel asked, staring at him intently. “Would it be down to the testimony of your super-secret witness?”
Lex stiffened. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
Lionel shook his head and tut-tutted. “I’m no fool, son, so it wounds me when you try to treat me like one,” he said mournfully. “I’ll wager my entire fortune that the elusive Miss Sullivan has pride of place on your witness list.”
“Then you’d lose that wager, because you’re wrong,” Lex replied. “Chloe’s dead, as you very well know.”
“Oh, I beg to differ,” he said smoothly. “Chloe Sullivan is very much alive, and you plan to present her in court tomorrow to stress the authenticity of your case.”
Lex uttered a derisive laugh. “Oh, I get it. Is this supposed to be some sort of shakedown for information? You’re wasting your time, Dad.”
“Actually, I’m wasting yours,” he mocked. “But I digress. Miss Sullivan is, I imagine, expected to show up in court tomorrow.” He gave Lex a sidelong glance. “Assuming she can tear herself away from the warmth and comfort of your bed, that is.”

Lex felt the blood cooling in his veins. He forced himself to remain unresponsive, and instead raised one fleeting eyebrow.
“I think you’ve gone completely insane in here,” he replied evenly. “You think she’s alive and sleeping with me?”
“Still denying it?” Lionel queried sweetly. “Ingenious plan, I must say; seducing a young, impressionable witness to get her onside. How very…Luthorian of you.”
Lex shook his head. “You’re grasping at straws, Dad.”
“There was definitely some grasping, but not by me,” he chuckled. “And she did a whole lot more than just ‘grasp’, as I recall.”
Memories of last night played through his mind, and he stood stock-still at the implication of his father’s words. Impossible. Had he somehow seen them?
“Eager young thing, isn’t she?” he taunted softly. “I must admit I was more than mildly intrigued at the sight of young Ms Sullivan’s head buried between your thighs, feasting keenly on your genitals.” He tilted his head. “Was that good for you, Lex?”
Lex fixed his father with a stony glare as he continued.
“What am I saying? Of course it was good for you; but the same can’t be said for her,” he chuckled. “Exactly how big are you, Lex? When you penetrated that poor child, you almost gave her a heart attack.”
“You saw us?” he uttered through clenched teeth.
“And finally, the denials fade away,” he said triumphantly. “I knew it was only a matter of time-”
“You saw us?” he repeated, his voice rising dangerously.
“Clearly a first-timer,” Lionel murmured loudly, clearly enjoying his discomfiture. “A little too heavy in the hips for my personal taste, but her breasts are magnificent; and what she lacks in skill, she makes up for in enthusiasm.”
Lex’s eyes narrowed into tiny slits. His blood boiled, and fury steadily built in him as his father continued speaking.
“You must be pleased that someone genuinely appreciates your hairless state; the poor dear doesn’t know any better.” He paused, and cocked his head. “Although, I suppose your follically-challenged groin probably made her oral task somewhat easier to carry out.”
Lex clenched his hands into tight fists. “You’re sick.”
“Merely observant. Though I must add I’m a tad disappointed you were too far gone to return the favour.” His eyes gleamed with predatory interest. “I’d have very much enjoyed a show of you reciprocating with equally enthusiastic enjoyment of her intimate parts.”
“Don’t you dare talk about her like that!” he seethed. “Don’t you dare!”
“A little tip from your old man,” he continued smugly. “Next time you deflower a virgin, let her be the one on top.” He leaned forward and his lips curved in a wide smile, but his eyes were as cold as ice. “It allows her to control the depth of your thrusts, and she won’t bleed quite as heavily.”
“Shut up, you bastard!” he raged.
“Although you’re probably planning to keep the blood-stained sheets as a sordid souvenir,” he mused. “Hmm…I do wonder what the DA and his team would do if they knew you had dallied with your star witness. If that information winds up in court, it’ll derail the trial for sure.”
“You’re wrong,” Lex raged. “We still have enough to put you away for life.”
“I doubt it,” he shot back. “Miss Sullivan’s testimony is the cornerstone of the entire case. Such a pity that she won’t be in court tomorrow to deliver it.”
“Why, you think she’ll bail on the trial because you saw us having sex?” he challenged. “No; she’s braver than that. You don’t know her like I do.”
“Well, that much is true, at least,” he mocked. “But I stand by what I said. Miss Sullivan will not be attending court tomorrow.”
“You can’t stop her Dad. For starters, you have no idea where she is,” he rebutted. “I’ve taken her out of the mansion and hidden her in the last possible place you’d ever think to find her.”
“Oh, I know where she is, son,” he replied, his voice dangerously low. “Believe me, I know. Why else do you think I’ve kept you here for the last hour or so?”
