Measure of my dorkitude

Quick health update on this stupid sinusitis. Bloody noses? Last week's news. The new annoying malady is a stufed-up ear. The ache went away overnight, but my left ear is still muffled. That bastard.

I skipped half of Queer as Folk 508 and all of 509, because I couldn't wait for the B/J reunion in 510. (And that's sooo not a spoiler unless you're ( Read more... )

BTW, from the AP Style Guide: it's impossible to have a "first annual," as an "annual" must be held in at least two successive years.
Is it weird that I knew this?
I've found myself mentally correcting punctuation and spelling in fic. Emails that come in also. I have a friend that has a home business (she sells Southern Living at Home) and she always sends out these emails that are just horrifying! She prints flyers too. Her husband has told her to please forward a copy to him first so that he can proof it, but she never does. I just think it's flat-out tacky!
I'll do this meme (it is a fun one) in a day or so. Thanks for thinking of me!

Oh god, misspelled flyers are the devil. Though I do like laughing at ad execs who can't spell. (Mainly because I've been told I'm not qualified enough to work in advertising.) I can't deal with some fanboards, esp. the Yahoo groups. I can listen to run-on sentences, but I can't stand reading them.

Good lord, I cringe when I see some of the emails you have to approve. How do you stay sane?! Classics like, "OMG can ne1 upload the new ep! I need it now or I'll just die!!!1!!" and "Ok, I need these 12 songs uploaded, but I'm obviously too damn lazy to look for the links" would get a "Read before you post, you ignorant fuck!" from me. And if I see one more plea to upload to YSI because "Rapidshare/Megaupload won't work for me" message I'll lose my mind. BTW, is "Barbara" the infamous GH fan I've read about on other boards?

If I'd known that tagging you for a meme would get you to delurk, I would've done it sooner. Be prepared to get tagged more often :)

Heh, I DID post today in my LJ! It's my time of the month!

You would not believe the stress I cause myself every time I post in my LJ or as a comment in someone else's LJ. I have unbelievable anxiety over whether or not my punctuation is appropriate or if I'm using words correctly, etc. I can use spell check like the best of them, but I'm always unsure about everything else. Yet I have no problem picking apart other people's posts!

Some of those messages on the group are just so, so, so bad. It is hard for me NOT to email them and say something mean. I'm not sure why I'm even having to approve of the messages, I really need to ask Lindsay about this!

Hmmm, Barbara? I'm not sure...but please do dish!

Aww, don't stress out over posting on LJ. Post more often! The rare times you do post/comment, you make me laugh. (And that's with, not at, you.) I used to worry that people would read my LJ & think, "Ok she's trained to edit yet she can't keep from rambling." Or think that I'm a total pervert because 95% of my icons, stolen or self-made, feature naked men. That's when I have a beer & get over my anxiety :)

Not that everyone can't read this, but just in case...I've read that there's an fan named Barbara who claims to be close friends with Gale & Kim. This woman's posted on various boards that Gale comes over & watches the show with her. When someone calls her on it she promises to pull out her web cam, but Gale always runs away before she can take a pic. She's also claimed to know Jennifer Elster, she of the crazy Gale indie films. Someone supposedly met Barbara & claims that her house is a shrine to Gale, and that she's in her late 50s/early 60s. Any idea if all of this is true?

2. When I read fanfic, I correct typos and grammar errors. And no, I'm not working as a beta when I do this.

Hehe. I know most (all?) of you were not Xena fans, but if you were, you'll remember one of that fandom's most celebrated bards: Missy Good, aka Merwolf. She was so popular she had her own fanclub, the Merpups. Well, her Dar & Kerry uber-series was legendary, masterfully done ... but despite all her brilliance at plotting and characterization, her work was marred by the continuous misuse of 'it's' and 'its', as well as 'lead' and 'led' (misspelled every time it was used as a past-tense verb). It was amusing: I would download her HTML files, but before I read a word, I'd go through the text with my editor and fix all these errors, as well as replacing a list of words that she overused and which irritated me to no end ("chuckle", "nibble", "lover" ... I kept a small README file of the accumulated changes I needed to make). Then I'd read the story.

Heh, I was so worried about rambling (see: #3) that I left out the part where I have to run fic through spellcheck before I'll read it. Because there's a huge difference between "Spikes" and "Spike's" as well as "Brains" and "Brian's." And if it's a minor typo in the middle of a sex scene, I'll stop to fix it because "cum here" and "come here" are definitely not the same thing. It'd be so much worse if I got my hands on a hard copy. You should see what I do to the scripts I edit. (Mental note: need to find some fine point Pilot pens in red.)

As for the Kinsey Number, I took it yesterday and was shocked by the answer (soooooper straight). I need to retake it & steal the "sexuality spectrum test" from mamafunny2000. That one should reflect my love of Teh Gay :)

BTW: Baby_Sis, thou "Girly Tomboy" of Mystery, what about offering us a Kinsey number? I am agog with baffled anticipation. ;-)

I'm amazed you didn't tag me, since I am a huge dork. And geek.

I was writing my post when I saw that Dawnie tagged you, so I left you off my list. (But aren't you happy I didn't peg you as a dork?) Ok, so my dork traits might be more anal-retentive that geeky. I challenge you to out-dork me!

Wow, I totally feel you on 1, 2, and 3. I am a title index, a grammar whore and use far too many words to get past the fact that words are inevitably inadequate to encapsulate any given experience. Except that my grammar OCD comes out when I am reading novels, since I don't read much in the way of fanfic. And with novels you can't throw them in a text editor to fix them up before reading them. Garrr! I have had books that would have otherwise been on my best reads list had they not been marred with the presence of improperly used words such as 'then' in the place of 'than', or 'insure' instead of 'ensure', among those mistakes already listed by others here. Unless it is a really really good book, I have to put it down and cannot bring myself to finish the thing. Which sucks because I am also a bit OCD about finishing what I have started, with TV series, books, film trilogies, etc.

Wow, I think you might have me beat on the typo/grammar issue. Though using "then" instead of "than" is one of my top 5 grammar peeves. (Fuck's sake, did those people not learn about "greater than/less than"?) I'm OCD about tv shows, though I'll admit to bailing on The X-Files when Duchovny left; but I did return for the last year.

I used to get really frustrated when I started editting scripts. One guy in particular was sooo bad that I eventually had to drink a few beers to get through the job.
