Well, they just played the first two tonight, and they haven't introduced many of the main character points yet... Most can be caught up with minimal spoilers. I'm the same way, though: had to schedule in advance in order to catch the premier for Animorphs and Firefly, too.

I missed a lot of the later episodes of that show because of that whole can't sit-still-for-thirty-minutes type scheduling conflict... (Clover does not wait for commercial breaks to decide she wants in and out for the fifth time tonight. You'd think we'd make her wait, but the dog's got us trained too well.)
Score! It gets better as it goes along. Episode six and eight are gems. Four and five are a bit silly, but that's Doctor Who for you. Stick with it. It gets better.
