Chapter Eight

Theo got lucky, exceptionally lucky. As if by some twist of fate, a sheer miracle, Lindsay was able to move their appointment with Ruth Michaels. They would have to be there the day before Theo left for the official Insurgent press tour, but never the less Lindsay was going to get her appointment before he - hopefully they - left town.

On the fence about going along, Lindsay hadn't gave Theo an answer one way or the other. When he asked her, the morning of his impromptu interviews with Shailene, she had shrugged it off and changed the subject. Leave it to Lindsay to avoid a topic until the last minute. Never, would Theo put pressure on her but he had to tell his manager something. Bringing it up and not having a clear answer from Lindsay would only cause frustration.

“Linds.” Theo took a sip of his coffee. Outside was still dark and the city was quiet, or as quiet as New York City got. God love Lindsay, she was awake making Theo something to eat, insisting he couldn't do this on an empty stomach. “I need something to tell them.” he repeated his previous statement from a few moments ago.

“If Shai has some spare time, you should invite her over for a few drinks.” Lindsay suggested. “We could make an evening out of it.”

“Lindsay, you are avoiding the topic.”

“No, I want to talk about something else. So, are we inviting Shai over or not?” she pestered, sliding him a plate with toast and fruit on it. Watching her smile so sweetly at him there was nothing Theo could do to be mad. “I am sure she'd love to have a proper visit. We can invite some others as well.”

Theo chuckled trying to hide his annoyance. “You and Shai, coupled with a bottle of wine and I could relocate to Russia and you two would never notice.” he teased. “You want to invite others as well? Oh boy.”

“I was thinking we could invite Anna, maybe Ansel too.” Lindsay smacked Theo in the arm. “Smart ass.”

“We can.” Theo nodded. “And you love my ass.” he got out around a bite of toast.

“We need more friends.” Lindsay chuckled softly, noticing their list was extremely short.

“No we don't.” Theo shook his head. “We're a small group, I like that. Anymore and we'd be too crowded.”

“You're such an old man.” Lindsay poked fun.

“Old?!” Theo bellowed with a laugh. “I'm not old, you old lady.”

Placing her hands on her hips, Lindsay stuck her tongue out. “I'm not that old.” she defended her age. Older than Theo by only a month and three days, Lindsay wouldn't consider herself old.

Banter came to a close, when Theo's phone beeped, a message telling him a car had arrived and that he had to meet his publicist in less than an hour on the other side of town. Shoving a the last bit of pear into his mouth, Theo wiped his hands on a near by dish towel and frowned.

“That's my cue.” he kissed Lindsay on the forehead. “I wish you would have came.”

“No, you go. I have things I want to do today.” Lindsay gently tapped his slightly bearded cheek and gave him a kiss. “I'll see you when you get back.”

“I'll call between interviews.” Theo assured her, giving her a proper kiss and grabbing his jacket that had been slung on the back of a chair. “I love you.”

“I love you too.” Lindsay smiled. “Now go! They'll be pissed if you're late. Tell Shai I said hi. Don't forget to ask her over!”

“I will. I will.” Theo nodded, pulling open the door. “And don't you forget that I need answer.”

Rolling her eyes, Lindsay waved and shut the door behind Theo. Double checking to see that it was properly locked, she turned to face the empty house. It was nearing 5AM, logic told Lindsay to go back to bed. She hadn't slept more than two hours during the night and her body was screaming at her to rest. Instead of taking her body's advice, Lindsay poured a rather large cup of coffee. Making it perfect once she added a spoonful of Nutella, Lindsay took a sip and smiled. Grabbing one of Theo's sweaters off of the laundry basket and a blanket from the sofa, Lindsay slid open the patio door and stepped out into the brisk morning.

The air was chilly with a slightly thick dew covering the city. Lindsay settled in one of the cushy patio chairs and pulled her legs up to sit under her. Wrapped in the blanket, she took a sip of the hot coffee and sighed happily. Early March in New York was way too cold for sitting on the balcony drinking coffee before the sun came up, but there was something about the subdued atmosphere that had drawn Lindsay in. Somehow Lindsay had managed to stay curled up in Theo's sweater and the blanket until the last of her coffee was finished. A shiver running through her body resulting in chattering teeth had become the last straw.

Back inside, Lindsay poured another cup of coffee and added another spoonful of Nutella, licking the sticky brown goo off of the spoon. Theo would always make a disgusted face when Lindsay plopped a bit of the creamy spread into her coffee. He put ketchup on his mushy peas, what did he know? Lindsay giggled to herself at the thoughts of the disgusting mess of mushy peas and ketchup that Theo would create each time he ate it. Thoughts of Theo's odd food combination aside, Lindsay and her hot cup of coffee wandered down the hall and into the bathroom.

Off to one side of the bathroom stood a gleaming white tub, hardly used anymore. When they had bought the condo the fact their tub was separate from a walk in shower had been a big selling point for Lindsay. Late night baths were always welcome, even more so when Theo could be convinced to join her. Lindsay sighed, taking a sip of her coffee, it seemed Theo never wanted to do anything with her anymore. Turning the taps on to draw a hot bath, she sat her mug down on the edge of the tub and went to find her favourite bubble bath.

Once she was engulfed in the warm water and the fresh watermelon scented bubbles, Lindsay closed her eyes and rested her head back on the edge of the tub. Baths used to be one of her favourite things, until she almost stopped taking them all together, they weren't as nice when Theo didn't participate. Everything in life was better when Theo was around. When he was gone Lindsay missed him too much. If she thought hard enough about it, when Theo was gone that is when her delusions seemed to get worse too. They were still there when Theo was around, but Lindsay felt they were less frequent.

Theo was a form of stability in her life. He was an anchor. Someone to lean on. Ironically these were what she missed the most when he was away from her for long periods of time. Swirling her hand in the warm bubble covered water, Lindsay began weighing out the pros and cons of taking Theo's invitation to accompany him on the next press tour.

Somewhere on the other side of town, tucked away in a green room, Theo sat quietly checking his phone. In the background a PA rambled on about interviews and how things were going to be executed once the time came. Nodding, Theo glanced up to make it look a though he was paying attention. To the side, his publicist rolled her eyes, there were times when her client was an absolute pain in the ass. Although Theo had been much worse than he was being today, his attention could be slightly more focused. Giving up on Theo actually paying attention, the PA continued to talk directing all instructions at Shailene.

If Mr. Hot-Shot wanted to ignore his orders, then he could fall flat on his face. Nobody was there to babysit him, or so it seemed. Having Shailene in the chair next to him, Theo knew that even when the random stranger gave up on him that Shailene would be there to save the day. Outward it looked like he was just being an arrogant Mr. Hot-Shot, inwardly he had sent several text to Lindsay and they had all remained unread.

“Theo.” Shailene waved her hand in front of him, giggling. They were alone, which meant they had ten whole minutes of being normal. “Earth to Thee.”

“Yes, Shai?” Theo asked not bothering to even look up from the screen in his hand.

“You need to put that away, focus on reality.” Shailene teased poking him in the arm.

“I was checking to see if Lindsay had answered my text.” He cleared his throat and sat up straighter.

“Aha.” Shailene nodded. Nothing more needed to be said on the subject, she understood.

When she had first met Lindsay, the woman seemed a little off beat - not in a bad way. Shailene found it quirky and kind of endearing, she liked that Lindsay had her own beat to follow. Working with Theo as closely as she was meant she had got to know him quite well, but he never really talked about his girlfriend in much detail. Eventually, after Theo was absolutely certain he could trust his co-star, he told Shailene everything she needed to know. At that point, Ansel had become fairly close to Lindsay and Theo wanted Shailene to hear the truth straight from the source.

Since then, Shailene seemed to completely respect Lindsay and treated her no different than any other person. Theo was thankful for that, as was Lindsay. It tore Lindsay apart when somebody who barely knew her treated her like she was some sort of fragile little girl. Shailene would never treat Lindsay like she was any less of a human, it was demoralizing and nobody felt good when being talked down to. If Shailene were in Lindsay's shoes, she would hate it if people treated her like anything less than a person.

“I'm in town for an extra day, ya know so I can do whatever I want for a day.” Shailene explained, smiling sweetly at Theo. “Would you mind if I crashed for a night?” she wanted to draw the subject away from any upsetting turns that it could take.

“No, not at all.” Theo replied happily. “It works out in a way, Lindsay wanted you to come over anyway. You might as well just spend the night.”

“Oh that is perfect!” Shailene grasped his arm. “I can totally use a break away from all of this, even for a night.”

Theo smirked. “I'll alert the neighbours when I get home. Make sure they are prepared for the shit storm.” he teased.

“Lindsay and I just like to have fun.” Shailene shrugged.

Maybe a little too much fun. Couple them with some liquor and there was no telling what the two would get into. Theo loved seeing Lindsay in such a happy mood, he would never really complain. He complained, but never actually meant any of it.

“How has she been?” Shailene brought up a bit more serious question. She had wanted to stay away from this side of the conversation, yet here it was.

“Uh.” Theo nervously picked at imaginary lint on his jacket. “It's been touch and go. Overall, things are pretty much the same.”

Shailene frowned. “You are positive that me staying is okay?”

“Yes.” Theo answered without hesitation. “Linds will be thrilled to have someone to fuss over. She likes things that keep her busy.”

“I really can't wait to see her, but if it is going to cause an issue then maybe I shouldn't.”

“It won't cause an issue. Lindsay wants you to come over anyway. This will be fine. Trust me.” Theo smiled, gently patting Shailene's hand.

Shailene answered with a skeptical look, if she was disagreeing then she never said. Bottom line, Lindsay needed friends around, Shailene was a good person to have around when you needed a friendly face.
