Chapter Twenty Four

“A boy.” Isaac groaned. “My fifteen year old daughter has invited a boy over.”

Perrie having friends was a good thing, or so Nikki had tried to insist when Isaac had began grumbling about Perrie's new friend. He had been the one who encouraged her to make a few friends, hoping it would make life in Tulsa easier. In a few weeks Perrie would be staring a new school and it was going to help if she had someone to watch out for her. This would be easier if Perrie's first friend was a girl.

“You need to take a deep breath and chill out.” Zac laughed slapping Isaac on the back. “Boys and girls can hang out, it isn't against the law.”

Nikki had heard enough of her husband's complaints, shipping him out of the house. Now he sat on a lawn chair in Zac's garage bitching about the same thing that had got him kicked out of the house. Zac could see exactly what happened here. Sick of her husband, Nikki exiled him knowing that he would end up at Zac's. Once Isaac was done ranting to Zac, he would return home feeling better than when he had left. Sneaky.

“You were a fifteen year old boy, do you not remember what it was like?” Isaac narrowed his glare toward Zac.

“To be fair, I didn't have a typical fifteen year old boy experience. I highly doubt this kid has traveled the world twice in a band.” Zac continued to laugh.

“Well I remember what it is like.” Isaac pointed at himself. “It's not pretty.”

“I think that's unfair, this kid seems way prettier than you were at that age.” Zac knew better than to harass his older brother, but it was just so fun.

“Fuck you.” Isaac snapped.

Fifteen year old boys were not to be trusted! Fifteen year old girls could be even worse if they really wanted to be. The idea of having Perrie hanging out with some random boy terrified Isaac.

“Honestly.” Zac sighed, pushing his hair out of his eyes. “I have known Tanner for a while, he's a good kid. He's polite, he is well brought up, and he's not the type to cause any trouble.”

“People said that about me too.” Isaac pointed out with a scoff. “Have you met the daughter I had as a teenager?”

“Dude, you're worrying over what? The fact your kid might turn out like you? Like Taylor?”

“She is nothing like Taylor!” Isaac defended loudly.

There was no way, no possible way, Perrie was anything like Taylor. Aside from the fact they shared some what similar genetics, they were miles apart. Perrie was way smarter than a teenage Taylor. Shifting uneasily in his chair, Isaac scratched the back of his head and sighed. Parenting a teenager was tough, he learned that quickly enough, but things just seemed to get harder the more they went on. To think, he still had three more after this.

“Perrie is a good kid, she is a smart kid, and I highly doubt she is the type of girl to go out looking for someone to hook up with. If she is hanging out with boys, then it's probably because they are friends. Sure, she probably has some kind of crush on the boy, but you don't need to worry.” Zac encouraged.

“Crush? Oh hell no!” Isaac shook his head frantically. “No, no! We are not ready for a crush.”

“You mean you're not ready.” Zac corrected. “Come on, Ike, it isn't the end of the world. Zoe hangs out with boys all the time.”

“Zoe isn't my problem.” Isaac tried to reason. “Yes, I love her and I will always look out for her, but she's my sister. It's different.”

“A teenage girl is a teenage girl.” Zac shrugged.

“Maybe, but Perrie is my responsibility. If I fuck this up then there is nobody to blame but me. Wait until Junia turns into a teenager.”

“We're fathers to girls, it happens. They grow up and they become teenagers, then adults. I get it, you have a lot to make up with Perrie.” Zac replied. “If you keep over reacting, you're only going to drive her nuts. Loosen up, let her have some fun. If she wants to hang out with a boy, let her. If she wants to kiss a few, let her do that too.”

That seemed to be the very comment to set Isaac off. “Oh no! Hell no, fuck that! Kissing? I don't think so.”

If he shook his head any harder, Zac was convinced it was going to fly off. Seeing Isaac's head go flying across the garage would be pretty amusing. “Calm down.” Zac spoke up. “So what if she wants to kiss some boys? What are you going to do, sit between them the whole time he's there?”

“If I have to.” Isaac nodded firmly.

“No, you're going to let them hang out and not bother them.” Zac added. Perrie would thank him for this later.

“Maybe I can just let the kids follow them around? Ya can't really do much with three kids hanging off of you.” Isaac voiced his new found idea.

Unable to even find a solution for that one, Zac sat dumbfounded. Where did Isaac come up with these ideas? Distracted by his wife, Zac greeted Kate as she stepped into the garage. No doubt she was popping in to check on her husband, who was supposed to be cleaning out their junk. Behind him, a pile of old toys and a broken bike laid in the middle of the floor. He hadn't made much progress.

“Hello boys.” Kate greeted them, leaning against the door frame and folding her arms.

“Hey honey.” Zac greeted her with a sheepish grin.

“What are we doing in here?” Kate asked, eyeing her husband.

“We,” Zac motioned between himself and Isaac, “are working on Isaac's parenting issues. Perrie invited a boy over to hang out. You know Tanner?” Kate nodded and commented something about how he was a nice kid. So everybody kept telling Isaac. “Ike thinks he should make the munchkins babysit them. I told him to chill, let them hang out.”

“You're an idiot.” Isaac scoffed at his brother.

“Do you really have that little trust in your daughter?” Kate disapproved of the idea. “If you did that, Perrie will only end up hating you. You were a fifteen year old boy, think of how awkward it was hanging out with girls. Tanner is going to be scared shitless, I highly doubt you will have to monitor them like a hawk. They'll do good to even speak.”

“See!” Zac pointed to Kate. “See? I told you! Ike, you need to relax. They're kids, they do stupid shit. We did stupid shit, lucky for you Perrie is smarter than us.”

There was a possibility that Zac had a point, Kate as well. Perrie was smart and chances were that once Tanner got to the house the two wouldn't even know what to say. Isaac couldn't take that chance. He remembered all too well what being a teenager was like.

“I don't like this.” Isaac admitted with a huff.

“You're her father, it's your job to disapprove. As long as you don't go overboard.” Kate encouraged. “Take it from someone who used to be a fifteen year old girl, life is tough when it comes to being friends with boys. Over protective fathers make it worse. Don't ruin her chance for having a good friend.”

So far Perrie had been one of the best teenagers Isaac had ever met, they'd had their little issue when they got into their argument over Taylor; other than that they had no problems. Zac was right, Perrie wasn't the type of kid to cause trouble and if she did then it wasn't going to be anything major. Isaac had heard a story or two about Perrie's disruptive behaviour and aside from sneaking in late or lying for Ben, there was nothing that could ever indicate she wasn't a good kid.

The idea of allowing her to freely hang out with a boy just wasn't sitting right. Kate gently explained that Isaac was just worried, because he knew what he was like. Although she wasn't shaming Isaac, it didn't mean every boy was going to be that way. If Nikki felt they needed to loosen up and let Perrie hang out with Tanner, then Isaac needed to trust his wife and go along with it. Of course, Kate added - Zac agreed - if Tanner did something that Isaac didn't approve of then it was logical and perfectly acceptable to kick the boy out.

Telling Isaac that she had invited a boy over to hang out wasn't all that difficult. Perrie, still slightly upset with him for grounding her, used it to bother him more than anything. However, once word got out the fact that she had invited Tanner over to hang out was slowly becoming a hassle. In the two days since Perrie had dropped the news on Isaac, it appeared as though everybody else she talked to somehow knew. Either she had been living among psychics or somebody had been telling everybody. Her bet was Nikki.

When she had talked to Grady and Laura, it had been Laura who gave her the lecture on boys. Perrie had expected that, mostly because Grady never really saw a problem with the opposite genders hanging out. Perrie had always had a few friends who happened to be male. Ben had always had friends who happened to be female. Nature verses nurture or something like that was how Grady looked at it.

Ben, there was another story. As requested, Perrie had called him back shortly after Isaac had delivered the message to do so, only to have him rant about the Tanner situation. Slightly bothered that his little sister was in fact growing up, Ben informed her that he wasn't happy about this. At the same time, if Perrie was making new friends then who was he to say anything? When it came to the end of it, Ben just wanted her to be happy. Before ending the call, Perrie had asked if Evan wanted to add anything to the subject; it felt like everybody else had. Declining to add any further input, Evan simply told Ben to say hello for him. Perrie knew she liked him for a reason.

Even Zoe had something to say about this, not that Perrie minded since it was coming more from a point closer to her own views. The two sat on the edge of Zoe's bed, flipping through some magazines chatting about their latest shopping trip. Standing in front of her little sister's full length mirror, Avery made a disgusted face and tossed a sundress she had been admiring back in a pile on the floor.

“Don't make those faces at my clothes.” Zoe scolded.

“It's not what I expected was all.” Avery shrugged, turning to face the others.

“Life never truly is.” Perrie commented, not bothering to even look up from some article she was reading on Josh Hutcherson.

“Wow, someone is all dramatic.” Avery teased gently nudging Perrie's leg with her foot. “What's up?”

“She has a date and Ike is freaking out.” Zoe smirked, flipping the page in her magazine.

“It isn't a date!” Perrie defended dropping her magazine and sitting up straighter. “He is just a friend. Why is everybody freaking out? Isaac told me to make friends, I made a friend and apparently he is the wrong one?” Perrie huffed.

“Well, I think he's just worried.” Avery offered. “Ike worries, it's what he does.”

Isaac needed to stop worrying. Perrie covered her face with her hands and groaned, she was beginning to regret ever talking to Tanner.

“Do you like him?” Avery asked, leaning closer.

“Tanner? No way, we're just friends.” Perrie protested. How could she like him? She hardly knew him. Besides, even if she did like Tanner there was no way it was going to ever go beyond being friends. Perrie doubted that Tanner liked her in that way, despite the way he acted around her.

“But he's cute.” Zoe sang out teasingly.

“Sort of?” Perrie cautiously agreed. “He seems nice but I promise, we're just friends.”

“How do we know Tanner?” Avery asked, wiggling her way in to sit between the two girls on the bed.

“His mom owns the dance studio. He has known Zac and Kate for a while.” Perrie explained. Telling Avery how she had gone out for ice cream and got a ride home from Tanner's mom, Perrie shrugged at the end of her story. “Is it wrong to be friends?”

“Absolutely not!” Avery shook her head and grinned. “Everybody needs friends, I'm glad you're finally making some.”

“Except that Lydia girl.” Zoe added making a face.

“Yeah she seems like a bitch, lets not be friends with her.” Avery agreed firmly.

“No worries.” Perrie laughed. She had absolutely no intentions of ever being friends with Lydia.

“If hanging out with Tanner goes well, then you should ask him to hang out with us sometime.” Avery suggested. Zoe nodded, turning her attention back on her magazine. “If you like him and want to hang out with him, Ike will worry less if Tanner is just part of a group.”

Snorting, Perrie rolled her eyes and looked at Avery in a skeptical manner. “Isaac not worry? Yeah, hell will freeze over first.”

“It sounds impossible, I know, but it isn't.” Avery giggled a little, wrapping her arm around Perrie she squeezed her tight. “He worries about the things he loves, he can't help it.”
