i've come across more and more blog-novels lately. most of them are good and even the ones that aren't so good impress me because of the shear nerve the authors had in publicly publishing their work in the first place

Sure, post it here, why not?caliburnsusantoMarch 31 2008, 19:13:46 UTC
Just remember everything in LiveJoural is Googled by their relentless bots, so if you don't want it published to the entire planet be sure you put it behind a filter and behind a cut. Even then things can "get out" so post accordingly (that goes for everything, of course).
OK, here's my dissenting viewpoint... take it with as many grains of salt as you think necessary. I think writing a book is hard, and when/if I finish The Book I'm certainly planning on getting paid for it. There is no way I'd do anything that would jeopardize my ability to get published & paid. I might post shorter things just for the sake of building a fanbase, and I like sharing what I write on my blog (tho' I've never posted any of my fiction), but a novel just represents too much of an investment of time and energy and creativity and blood and tears for me to give it away.
Of course, you may be less venial than me, and thus your results may vary...
well, not so much that i want to give it away, as i think that maybe it might not be good enough to paper-publish. plus, as i mentioned, it's not finished and may never be. this is the story that i made up in 1988, from a role playing game i made for my cousin. it's just for fun.
if i thot i could actually finish it, within a set amount of time, i think i would try to get it published, but i just don't have the drive/energy/desire to write that way. that's why i started thinking that maybe this way would be cool. it's out there, available for comment, but without the pressure of genpop opinion to get it out.
don't know if i'm explaining it very well, but there ya go.
I have no answers, but here are some questions to ask yourself:
Who are you writing for? What do you want to get out of writing the novel? Out of publishing it? Do you get what you want from online publishing? Does the content of the novel hurt your reputation or relationships with people you know? (ie: Do you gain from anonymous publication?)
me. i want it out there so i feel that i've done *something* with it other than leave it on my hard drive 'til it corrupts. i believe so, but only time would tell. no. but i do need to look into the copyright issues re: posting anonymously vs. real name attached somewhere.
