spn_j2_xmas Gift for: The very awesome hunters_retreat who wanted Jared and Jensen are both divorced and wondering why it didn't work out (end of season 6.) They have a little too much to drink and finally figure it out. I kinda tinkered with it a little bit, moving it a few years into the future and after SPN. I hope you enjoy it!

Jensen’s cell phone vibrated in his jeans, drawing his attention briefly away from scene rehearsal in front of him. He pulled his phone out, unlocking it, and opening the text message from Jared.

Divorce went through today.

Jensen’s mouth drew down in a frown and he stepped back away from the camera lens he had been looking through and turned to his assistant.

“Have everyone take ten,” he told Danielle, and she raised an eyebrow in silent question but when he didn’t offer one and just turned back to his cell phone, she stepped out from behind the camera and made his announcement.

Jensen tapped Jared’s name on his phone and hit the call button, pressing the cool plastic against his ear as he headed away from his set and toward an empty spot a few feet away. Frustration slid through him as Jared’s phone stopped ringing and went to voicemail. He knew Jared was next to his phone, had to be since he had just sent the text, and was choosing to ignore him.

Jensen drew in a breath when Jared’s voicemail beeped. “Hey man,” he started but lapsed into silence because he wasn’t sure what to say. “Just got your text. I…” he trailed off again. “I’ll be here when you want to talk.” He settled on breathing into the phone for a few more moments, before pulling the phone away from his ear and thumbing the end call button.

Divorce. Christ, he really hadn’t thought Jared and Genevieve would go through with it. They’d been great with one another at Caroline’s 2nd birthday party last weekend. But Jensen supposed that they were both actors, that they could be friendly and cordial if they needed to be. He just wished he’d been able to do more for Jared throughout the process. But Jared had kept things pretty close to the vest, casually mentioning to Jensen over a play date with their daughters six months ago that things weren’t working out between him and Genevieve and that she’d gotten her attorney to draw up the divorce papers. Jared had seemed rather shocked when he first told Jensen, desperate to fix the relationship with Genevieve and throwing himself back into the relationship one hundred percent. But obviously it hadn’t been enough if the divorce had been finalized.

Jensen closed his eyes and remembered when Danneel had set him down on a Tuesday night to talk. Both of them exhausted, him from long hours on the set of his latest movie, and her from raising a six-month-old baby girl. He remembered arguing with her, denying the fact that whatever that had been there when they first got together, when they married, wasn’t there now. It hadn’t seemed right. They had a baby, a beautiful daughter that they both loved to death. But as Danneel had pointed out, while they both loved Lexie, they didn’t love another anymore. The fire that had been there for years had finally died, and Danneel didn’t want to force something that wasn’t there. Jared had been the first person he’d called that night. The need to run, to escape the decision to divorce his wife, and the fear of what was going to happen with his daughter, had landed him in a bar with Jared, and later passed out in Jared’s guest bedroom for the night.

Jared had been there for him through the whole process. And it hurt, more than Jensen would like to admit, that Jared hadn’t let him play the same role in return. He’d been there for Jared, met him when he wanted to get drunk, hung out and commiserated about how things just didn’t work out, but he always felt like Jared had been holding back with him. And it hurt that Jared hadn’t trusted him after all these years to really just tell him really what was on his mind.

Jensen took in a long deep breath and let it out slowly. The tension left his body with the air in his lungs and on his next breath he focused back on the set in front of him. He had a job to do. And Jared, Jared would call when he was ready to talk, which obviously wasn’t yet.

It was a surprisingly decent hour when Jensen got done the scenes he needed to finish for the day. He drove on autopilot, calling in a pizza delivery on his way home, knowing it would arrive shortly after he got home.

He pulled into the driveway of his house and frowned at the black SUV in the driveway until he got a little closer and realized it was Jared’s. He hadn’t heard from Jared since the text earlier in the day and it surprised him that Jared had decided to swing by rather than calling. He hit the garage door opener on his visor and waited for the door to open before he pulled his car inside, out of the hot L.A. summer night. He clicked his button again once he was inside and pushed open his car door, moving around the front of his car and opening up the door on the side of the garage that lead into the house.

The aroma of a home cooked meal greeted him and he cut a quick glance down at his watch, seeing that it was half past seven and frowning when he realized the pizza should be here any minute. It would keep till tomorrow night.

Nails clattering on his hard wood drew his attention down the short hallway toward the rest of his house, as two dogs turned the corner. Callie, the six month old puppy, lost her balance, and slammed into the wall, getting her feet underneath her and continuing full-bore at Jensen. Harley appeared behind her, slowly making his way out of the kitchen to investigate who had arrived and whether or not they were worth his attention.

“Hey Callie puppy,” he stooped down, opening his arms and letting the dog slam into his chest. He wrapped his arms around her to help keep her on her feet and she tilted her head up and started bathing him in long, wet licks. “Come on girl, settle down,” Jensen cooed to her, gently pushing down on her shoulders to sit her down.

“Callie!” Jared’s stern call of the puppy’s name settled her down. She stopped licking Jensen and turned, taking off back toward Jared. She slammed into her daddy’s legs, bouncing back to sit at his feet, tail wagging back and forth across the floor.

Jensen looked up, and further up from his crouch on the floor, and offered Jared a smile. “See you still have the key,” Jensen commented as he stood.

Jared nodded, one hand stretched down to pet Callie’s head as she stretched up his legs, nails digging into his jeans, as she licked at his hand. “Thought the conversation would go better in person, and with alcohol,” Jared explained. He brought his hand up to run through his hair, pulling it back from his face and tucking what he could behind his ear. “I uh… I was so focused on figuring out whether or not we’d go through with the divorce that I didn’t think about where I’d go after it was finalized. Genevieve hasn’t kicked me out, but it’s weird now, you know?”

Jensen nodded and offered Jared a tired, knowing smile. “I’ve got an empty room. You’re always welcome, Jared,” he offered. The smile that crept over Jared’s face brought a genuine one to Jensen’s as well. “Something smells delicious,” Jensen changed the subject, moving further down his hallway toward Jared and the dogs, and followed them into the kitchen.

“Dogs have already been fed. Our dinner should be ready in a few,” Jared said, loud enough for his voice to carry over his shoulder.

Jensen stopped just inside the kitchen, leaning against the wall and watching as Jared went back to stirring the contents of the pot bubbling on the stove.

“I cooked to get in your good graces. Figured it’d work as a bribe to let me stay for awhile. If I’d known you’d just offer up a room, I’d called for pizza,” Jared told him.

“About that,” Jensen started but was cut off by the doorbell ringing. Both the dogs started barking, taking off for the door, and Jensen reached into his back pocket for his wallet. “I ordered pizza. Didn’t know you’d be here,” he explained.

Jared chuckled and then whistled for the dogs. “Go get the pizza. I’ll finish up dinner.”

Stuffed and sated from dinner and more than a few beers, Jensen melted into the cushions on his couch and turned on the TV, flipping over to Sports Center. He kicked his feet out to rest on the coffee table in front of him. Jared appeared, followed quickly by the dogs, a few moments later. He handed Jensen one of the beers in his hand and tossed down two chews for the dogs. Harley laid down immediately to chew his but Callie tossed hers around, trying to get Harley’s attention and failing miserably.

“He really hates me for replacing Sadie,” Jared stated as he moved around the coffee table, blocking Jensen’s view for a moment before he plopped down on the couch, arm, side, and thigh pressed up against Jensen’s even though there was plenty of room on the other side of the couch.

Jensen’s eyes slid closed as Jared’s insane warmth radiated out against him. He hadn’t realized how much he had missed this, how much he’d missed Jared.

“Everything alright?” Jared asked, turning slightly to face him, which just pressed them closer together.

Jensen’s eyes snapped open and he met Jared’s worried gaze. “Shouldn’t I be asking you that?” Jensen returned, avoiding the question entirely.

Jared shrugged, bringing the bottle to his lips and taking a couple long swallows. “Gen said it would hurt worse if it still meant something, something more than just our past love and our love for Caroline,” he whispered. He took another long swallow before he put the bottle down on his thigh, twisting it back and forth, the condensation soaking into the fabric staining it darker.

Jensen wasn’t sure what to say. The conversations that he and Danneel had shared before the divorce, and even now, had a similar theme. Though both of them were doing well without each other. The thought of his divorce still stung, even now.

“She’s got a date this weekend,” Jared announced, eyes down and focused on the beer bottle, using his thumbnail to pick at the label.

“Already?” Jensen couldn’t keep the shock out of his voice.

Jared could only nod and offer him a tight smile. “She was right though. I mean, it hurts, but it doesn’t hurt like it should. I don’t have the desire to punch the guy’s face in…at least not yet. If he hurts her that’s a complete ‘nother story,” Jared added.

Jensen chuckled. “Yeah, I can understand that.”

“Is Danneel seeing anyone?”

Jensen nodded. “Yeah. His name’s Ethan, business, suit and tie kinda guy, but he treats her right, dotes on Lexi, and always shakes my hand,” he threw the information out there.

“So, you wish there was something you could dislike about him?” Jared asked, looking at him.

“Sometimes, especially when I’m sitting here by myself and he’s spending the night with Danneel and Lexi. It’s the Lexi part that bugs me most. But Danneel has made it clear to me and to him that I’m her father, and he’s handling that well.”

“That’s what I worry about too. I can’t stand the thought of not having Caroline in my life. I mean, Genevieve swore I could have her whenever I wanted. All I needed to do was ask if I wanted her outside the schedule we’d set up…” he let out the rest of his breath with a whoosh and tilted his head back to rest against the back of the couch.

“Just keep the lines of communication open,” Jensen offered and reached out, hand landing on Jared’s thigh. He meant to just offer him a quick pat, simple, something he’d done countless times before, but instead of clapping his hand down, he left it there, feeling the familiar warmth radiating from Jared’s thigh. He felt the muscles in Jared’s thigh tense for a second and then immediately relax as Jared somehow managed to melt further back into the couch.

Jensen tilted his head to the side to study Jared. He was almost too close, his vision blurring and doubling slightly as he looked at him. Jared’s eyes were open, but barely, as he focused on the newscast on the TV. But when Jared looked over at him, Jensen’s heart skipped a beat at the intensity he saw there.

“Do you think it’s weird that I have a key to your place?” Jared asked him, voice pitched low, serious.

Jensen didn’t hesitate, just shook his head. He’d never really questioned it before. But he did suppose it was different from his other friendships. He’d never swapped keys with Steve or Chris.

“Genevieve said she didn’t have the key to Maria’s house and they’ve been maid of honor in each other’s wedding. She told me that I should really think about that Jensen.”

Jensen swallowed hard. “And?” he forced out, past suddenly dry lips. His tongue snaked out, wetting his lips and his heart sped up as Jared’s eyes tracked the movement.

Jared’s gaze traveled up to meet Jensen’s. “And I got divorced today,” he slowly stated.

“And you came here,” Jensen added because if he was understanding this correctly, then he actually had a chance, one he didn’t think would ever happen.

“Nowhere else felt right, but here.”

A smile pulled Jensen’s lips up, and he felt his face flush as Jared continued to stare at him. Jared’s face lit up with its own smile, blinding as it always was, and then he was leaning down, moving slowly to give Jensen time to move away.

But Jensen had been waiting for this, waiting since he figured it out and realized what others had seen for years. He leaned up, meeting Jared halfway. The first touch of their lips was tentative. Both hesitant, a little unsure, about changing the dynamics of their relationship. His fingers tightened on Jared’s thigh, fingernails scraping against the denim fabric, and it was all the motivation that Jared needed.

He surged down, mouth pressing down hard against Jensen’s as his hand settled against the side of Jensen’s face, fingers sliding through Jensen’s short hair. The kiss was messy, teeth bumping against one another, the wet slide of tongues, and Jensen felt himself harden just from the kiss.

They broke apart, leaning their foreheads together, and worked to catch their breath.

“Think you’re going to stick around for awhile?” Jensen whispered after a moment, heart still racing in his chest.

“As long as you’ll have me,” Jared whispered his reply as he leaned down to kiss Jensen again.
