I was thinking of The Dark Is Rising, too, at lunchtime when I was looking out of the window at the snow which has started to fall again. It was so gloomy I switched on the Christmas lights, which, since we're trying to be energy conscious, normally don't go on until 4 pm. The road to hell, etc. ;)
TDIR is a magical book, and for our family it's as much a part of this time of year as carols from King's. Thank you for those beautiful, evocative extracts!
Great minds think alike... ;-) I do look forward to the children being old enough to share TDIR with me.
No snow at all here, much to the small ones' indignation! (But frankly, given that the library heating is broken and we're all huddled over fan heaters, that's just as well)
I think if there is one day in the year when one may be less carbon-conscious, Winter Solstice is it. Keep warm!
