Bats after the belfry

May 17, 2016 22:56

Yesterday's # happything: I cycled back from bellringing practice along the Thames towpath, in the twilight - and got dive-bombed by numerous bats. And had to swerve round a rabbit, and was passed by a boat gently chugging along with a lantern at the front. It was absolutely magical. I feel so lucky to live where I now do.

I pulled up Oxford on Google Maps, enlarged it nicely, and think I see where your rode your bike along the river. Hooray for technology!

(And looking at that map makes me think I should be re-reading His Dark Materials. Why didn't I think of it sooner?

Along the south/west bank, pretty much from the Head of the River pub (on St Aldate's street, the A4144) to Osney Mead - then I turn off the river to get back to our road about 5 minutes inland :-)

I really do rather love bats.

So do I as long as they're outdoors. We had one trapped indoors once when I was a child and, rather like birds, that was a bit scary as the poor thing flew round wildly crashing into things...

That sounds totally amazing. I love bats - they're welcome to eat all of the mosquitoes they can in my area. I think we'll always have more than enough for the next meal.

There are plenty of insects along the river here for them too! And I saw one in our garden last night as well :-)
