I think it's very unnatural to force ourselves to stay awake with so much artificial light. I have far more energy in the summer, and given the choice at this time of year I'd only be active during the hours of daylight!
I honestly don't understand the problem here. Basic modesty standards are met, surely, and at least for me PJs have the same basic structure as day-clothes (loose-fitting trousers and a tee), just softer fabrics. What's not to love?
I think it's the extension of the idea that we do tend to insist, at weekends, that the SPs are dressed for lunch (because if they don't get dressed then they'll be prone to slump in front of a screen all day rather than going and playing outside).
I have known families who have a strict "no breakfast until you're dressed" rule, which always seemed a bit much as breakfast to me is about as informal as meals get! It may be some very English relic of the days of large aristocratic house parties or something...
