Ear infections and the Olympics

Aug 22, 2008 16:22

Well, so much for my optimism that I would be back "tomorrow" with another LJ entry ... a week ago. My health evidently just hates me. I've come down with a very unpleasant infection in both ears. When it struck on Sunday night, I very nearly called 000, the pain was that extreme for about three hours. Fortunately, it then went down slightly ( Read more... )

Thanks - I think I'm finally on the mend. Over the last 24 hours, my hearing has definitely getting better. I'm bloody bored of sitting at home and staring at the same four walls!

Psh... the US and China haven't won everything. France got the gold in men's epee, the only Olympic event that matters.

Hah! I am considerably disappointed that none of the fencing was broadcast here. Well, maybe it was briefly and I missed it, but I've been home sick so much and the Olympics has been the only thing on that I honestly find that hard to believe. I was looking forward to some fencing too. But no, instead of showing much/any fencing, archery, weightlifting, shot put, etc., we instead got replay after replay of Australians winning swimming gold. Yawn.

I don't really like the Olympics, but while I enjoy watching the tennis matches (since I'm a tennis junkie) I think they should get rid of tennis. It seems slightly unfair to the players. Think about it- they spend all their time training for Wimbledon and the US Open, and the Olympics fall RIGHT in between the two majors. They have what, two weeks to train?? And now the US Open is starting, so they've had a week off? It's a shame for people like me who don't care about the Olympics and want to see their favorite player in top form, but probably won't.

That being said, I hope you feel better!!!!

Yikes, I didn't realise the schedule was so intense for the tennis players. The point I make about cutting a sport from the Olympics if an Olympic gold is not the highest level of achievement probably applies to tennis too, though given its global popularity, it seems perhaps a bit odd to me to cut it. Plus, correct me if I'm wrong, but the top players could elect to sit out the Olympics, couldn't they?

Thanks; I think I'm finally getting better. Just in time too, as in a couple of days, there'll be no more Olympics and daytime TV will be full of absolute crap again!

They can most certainly sit ouf of the Olympics if they wanted to. I think that for many players, getting a gold medal is a huge deal, so that's why they choose to play. The reason it's unfair to the players (even the ones who aren't IN the Olympics) because of the timing. It's like they have to choose what's more important to them, but in the end, they'll probably end up screwing themselves over if they go for the gold (ugh cliche).

The other reason to cut tennis is because it's already such a global sport- from February to October, you get to see the greatest tennis players from all over the world play each other....and this happens every single year. How is it any different than the Olympics (minus the medals, of course)? They don't even get that many points to affect their ATP rankings.

Granted, I shouldn't be saying any of this because I love tennis so much! I think it just stems from my hatred of the steroid ridden macho pissing contest Olympics.

Hey, feel better soon!

I know, table tennis? A sport? Golf... also not a sport. And the "fencing" they do? Stupid as well.

You know, I love the table tennis. On more than one occasion, I've thought "I can't believe this is actually an Olympic sport", but ... I just find it bloody entertaining all the same. Plus I miss when I used to play it as a teenager.

And after suffering a few minutes of synchronised swimming this evening, even watching golf felt mildly appealling. I'm thankful some Aussie Rules football was on another channel, since turning the TV off and listening to my ears ring in silence wasn't the most exciting prospect ...

Ear infections SUCK. They were the bane of my existence when I was little.

This is the first ear infection I've ever had; seems I've managed to save it all up for one big, nasty hit. Being blind and deaf at the same time is proving not to be the greatest load of fun ever!
