Pluto and music, a random combination

Aug 26, 2006 22:48

For today's entry, I shall post some thoughts I've mentioned to a few folk before but have never really gotten around to posting as an entry. So a few of you will likely recognise the subject matter of at least half of this entry.

Because everyone has an opinion about Pluto. )

u2, dream theater, split enz, planets, pink floyd, joy division, crowded house, pluto, porcupine tree, music

U2: I hate Achtung Baby almost as much as All That You Can't Leave Behind and I don't think it is a good album in any sense.

Anyone with me?

HELL NO.

But then, you already knew that. ;-)

Wow, you like Achtung Baby?! I thought the only U2 album you liked was HTDAAB! ;)

Yes! You really could've fooled me with all those rants about how bad Achtung is. ;)

I don't think there are many Pink Floyd fans who consider The Wall to be a masterpiece. Maybe the live staging, but the album is flawed.

Whenever I come across discussion of Pink Floyd, it often seems to be "OMG DSOTM! THE WALL! TWO BEST ALBUMS EVAH!!!!"

I certainly dislike The Wall a lot more than anyone else I know.

I think The Wall is far from being the worst Pink Floyd album. It's not my favourite by any means, but I think there are some good ideas on it. It probably could have done without a few of the songs in a musical sense (Vera and Bring The Boys Back Home, for instance.) However, I don't think it could have done without those songs in a thematic sense. Overall, I think I appreciate The Wall more for the story/concept and the live show than some of the music itself. And you don't like The Final Cut? That's my favourite behind Animals! At least we're in full agreement over Animals ( ... )

Evidently never. I recall they made a statement about how they had no intention to do so and offered some weak excuse.

By the way, I hate to be the bearer of bad news - actually, in this case, I honestly don't, sorry. When I woke up this morning, I was dreading checking the rugby results, seeing that the All Blacks were playing your Springboks in Pretoria and the last time we lost a game was when we played in South Africa in July 2005. Given the way the 'Boks took it to Australia in their last game and were unlucky not to win, and due to the fact the game was at altitude, I thought the All Blacks were going to lose. Especially as we'd made something like 11 changes to the team and the media had called it a "second string squad".

The final score? New Zealand 45 - 26 South Africa. Including a successful SIXTY-ONE METRE penalty kick by Daniel Carter! Next week, the Blacks play the 'Boks again in Rustenberg; it's NZ's final Tri-Nations match, though you guys still have Australia afterwards.

I struggle to appreciate The Wall's story because I simply find it so painfully boring to listen to. I have never once been able to sit through it all; in fact, I prefer Achtung Baby. As far as The Final Cut goes, I find it gets quite boring, but I have listened all the way through it a few times and I like parts of it. The dullness of The Wall and The Final Cut is the primary reason why I prefer Gilmour; at least when Gilmour led Floyd, he made Sorrow ( ... )

Ok, not sure if this is going to work, seeing as I can't log into my own journal at the moment (changing around S2 or some bollocks like that...), but I'll give it a go...

Heee, I really should make more of an effort to comment on your posts that aren't U2 related...but hey, I'm a slight fanatic, and I've been gagging for a music conversation all day, so here we go...

The Achtung Baby bit...hmmm. I will say that I LIKE that album a lot- there's a couple couple of songs on there that have me absolutely foaming at the mouth (Love Is Blindess...Acrobat...So Cruel...Wild Horses...), and songs such as Zoo Station and The Fly which get me rocking out every time, and, yes, as much as I hate to admit this to you, it has One. And I, for one, really like TTTYAAW, especially for the lyrics about Dali and the supermarket trolley. However, I absolutely cannot bear Ultraviolet. In fact it probably takes out the coveted top spot in my "worst u2 songs of all time" list (note: it's not a very long list :P), and I simply cannot understand how a lot ( ... )
