[Prologue] [Chapter 1] [Chapter 2][
Chapter 3] Chapter 4:
Weeks passed everything was still the same as the time when he first arrived at the Pine-tree kingdom. Everyday was the same old routine of him following the DoS prince around and being bullied by him.
Nino trudged behind the stronger prince, carrying the supplies needed for the DoS prince’s hunting trip. Nino swore the bag was heavier than himself and on more than one occasion, Nino felt like collapsing onto the forest floor and just lie there, hoping some wild animal would put his misery to an end.
“Stop making so much noise!” snapped Jun, pointing his arrow as Nino who froze in fear, “You’re going to scare away the animals!”
Rooted to the spot in fear that Jun might really shoot an arrow at him if he made one false move, Nino watched as silently as he could as the older man took aim at a majestic deer which had just pranced towards the river and was now taking a long drink from it.
The deer was probably the most beautiful creature Nino had ever seen in his life, making him shiver at the thought of it being killed at the hands of the DoS prince. Any second now, Jun was going to take aim at the deer, killing it on the spot and Nino was horrified to know that he was about to witness Jun take a life. How Nino wanted to stop the other prince but knowing what Jun would do to him made him remain as still as a statue.
Nino’s gaze never left the unsuspecting deer as it finished drinking and started to walk away from the river. Why can’t Jun just shoot it get it over with? The wait was tearing him to shreds. Like Nino’s gaze, the tip of Jun’s arrow followed the movements of the prey, the string of Jun’s arrow getting tighter with each step it took.
And then the string went slack.
Nino could barely let out a gasp of horror as he realized what happened. Out of reflex he shut his eyes tightly, not wanting to witness the bloody scene. Keeping his eyes closed, Nino only opened them when he felt Jun’s bow being shoved into his chest. The DoS prince only gave him an annoyed looked as he announced that they were heading back to the castle.
Looking down at Jun’s hunting gear that was now in his hands, Nino counted the number of arrows - ten, exactly the same as there was before. Glancing up at the spot where the deer was just seconds ago, Nino barely caught its tail as it disappeared into the safety of the forest.
A little fawn beside it.

Nino really did not know what to make of what he had witness in the forest the other day. Had Jun really spared the life of the doe and its fawn? That would be inconsistent with what Nino knew about Jun. The ruthless prince was known to not even bat an eyelid as he slaughtered his enemies, it was only natural for him to be able to hunt without feeling the least bit remorseful. Unless…
Nino glanced at Jun who was reading a book on his bed, not really paying attention to him which was why Nino decided to risk not carrying out his duties of rearranging Jun’s huge bookshelf.
“Stop slacking!” snapped Jun, turning his attention away from ‘The Girl in the Sun’.
“I wouldn’t have to do this if you weren’t so fussy about how your books are organized,” mumbled Nino to himself, pulling down another stack of books and sorting them by genre. Nino wasn’t sure why he suddenly became so brazen, especially towards the DoS prince who had been torturing him for weeks, he blamed it on the fact that now that he wasn’t so lonely anymore, his bratty side was slowly starting to emerge.
“Those are classics!” Jun shouted back.
“Yeah...” replied Nino with all the sarcasm he could muster, “Classic romance novels,”
Nino smirked as he saw Jun flush beetroot, “There’s nothing wrong with knowing how to appreciate ‘Boys over Flowers’!” Jun argued.
“Of course, you seem to get inspiration from the male lead…” sighed Nino, ignoring a livid Jun as he now proceed to shelve the books, starting with the science fiction, followed by fantasy and then the mystery novels, “Lucky Seven…?” Nino read the title of the book aloud, holding it up to eye level, “I didn’t know there was a novel version,”
“That’s because you’re a dimwit!” shouted Jun, turning back to his book, furious at himself for even bothering with his slave.
Seeing that Jun has his back facing him, Nino decided it was safe enough to stick his tongue out at the DoS prince. Tired of rearranging those heavy books which Jun valued so much, Nino grabbed whatever book that was within reach - ‘Summer love shines in rainbow colors’ and causally sat himself down at the foot of Jun’s bed.
Sprawled out on his king sized bed, Jun noticed that Nino had stopped working and was now reading one of his book barely a meter away from him. A small voice inside his head was itching to yell at his prisoner, but Jun reasoned that he seriously couldn’t be bothered. After all, when was the last time he met somebody who could appreciate fine literature as much as he did.
When another servant came to serve tea later that afternoon, she really didn’t know what to do upon seeing the two princes engrossed in the respective books in their hands when they were at each other’s throats earlier that day.
