Chapter 6:

“Okay, Jun, spill,” said Nino.

With a few of his teammates surrounding him, Jun knew that there was no way they would leave him alone unless he told them what they wanted to know, “Yatter-blue was my senior in high school,”

A round of ‘ahs’ echoed through the room as the Gantz members understood why one of the Yatterman knew who Jun was. Fortunately for Jun, his teammates were distracted by Gantz announcing their points.

Matsumoto Jun - 72 points

.

Aiba Masaki - 26 points

Ninomiya Kazunari - 65 points

“Not fair, Nino,” whined Aiba, “why do you always get so many points?”

While everybody in the room was busy watching Nino and Aiba bicker, Jun slowly retreated to a corner of the room, hoping that nobody was paying him any attention. Slumped against the wall, Jun folded his legs against his chest and rested his head against his knee.

“Ohno Satoshi…” whispered Jun to himself, “Why in the world have you become a Yatterman?”

Sho watched as Ohno sat at his workbench, a pencil in hand, but not doing anything productive. His partner had been like that ever since they returned from battle about half an hour ago, and Sho really wanted to know what was on his mind.

“What is it, Ohno-kun?” asked Sho at last.

“It’s definitely him,” replied Ohno, still staring his desk.

“Eh?”

“That Gantz leader, he was definitely Matsumoto Jun, my junior from high school,”

“You mean you actually know him?”

“Yeah, but I heard from my sister who heard from his sister than he went missing about a year ago,”

Sho rubbed his aching head, “That was exactly what happened to Ninomiya and Aiba as well,” said Sho, remembering what he read in that news article, “Do you remember what happened to Jun before he went missing?”

“He was said to be involved in a car crash,”

“Ninomiya and Aiba were in a train crash!” exclaimed Sho, seeing the pattern.

“How is this relevant?” asked Ohno, not seeing why Sho cared.

“I don’t know, but I’m going to find out,”

Waving goodbye to Jun, Nino and Aiba headed off into the cool night. The door had opened once again, the first time it did for two days in a row, and the members were delighted to be ‘freed’.

Heading towards the town, Nino and Aiba were engaged in a light conversation about being a Gantz, video games and other nonsensical topics teenage boys would talk about.

“How about we go eat that ramen we were supposed to eat at?” suggested Aiba, pulling Nino in the direction of the shop.

“As long as we don’t get run down by a train again,” joked Nino.

Following his energetic friend, Nino tried to enjoy his day-off, but his thoughts about ramen were always rudely interrupted by the name ‘Sakurai Sho’. Nino knew he just saw the man that afternoon during their last battle, but he could not help but try to guess what the man who had saved him really looked like. Thanks to the mask the man wore, Nino couldn’t see the man’s whole face, annoying the hell out of Nino.

“Nino, look!” cried Aiba, pointing towards a sign which read ‘Strange and mystical animals exhibition: last day’.

“Go,” said Nino, giving permission to the honey-haired man to attend the exhibition, knowing very well how big of a fan of animals his friend was.

“But we’re supposed to hang out together today,” said Aiba, feeling slightly guilty.

“We can always hang out the next time the door opens,” reasoned Nino, hoping that Aiba would go, allowing him to sneak off to ‘Yama Toys’.

“You’re the best!” cried Aiba, giving Nino a short hug before running in the direction of the exhibition hall.

Nino watched his friend’s retreating back for about two seconds before turning swiftly on his heels and walking briskly towards the gigantic toy store.

“Here you go,” said Sho, taking a teddy bear from a high shelf and passing it to the little girl. Thanking Sho, the girl skipped away happily with the toy. Sho smiled. It was one of the rare days when he had the time to enter ‘Yama Toys’ main branch and soak in the happy atmosphere.

Around him, kids of all ages were having the time of their lives playing with his toys. Sho’s smile could only grow wider as the sound of children’s merry laughter floated in his ears.

“Sakurai-san, we should leave the work to us,” said a staff hesitantly.

“It’s okay,” replied Sho, “I just wanted to see the place for myself,”

Seeing that his employee wasn’t convinced, he added, “I’m not planning on firing anybody, relax,”

Entering the elevator, Sho pressed the button with the label ‘3’ and waited as the elevator brought him to his desired floor. Needless to say, this was his favorite floor in the entire store. On that floor, little boys in the Yatterman costumes were holding action figures of Yatter-red or Yatter-blue, engaged in a pretend battle with their friends or parents. Grabbing a Dorombo action figure, Sho engaged himself in a battle with a couple of kids.

“Nooooo” whined Sho as he pretended that the kid’s Yatter-blue action figure defeated his evil character. Laughing with the kids at their mini-battle, Sho picked up a box and handed it to them. Ruffling their hair affectionately, he told them he could have an action figure each for free.

Waving to them, Sho got up and scanned the room, wanting to see if there are other kids who would like to play with him. Around him, most of the boys were already in a battle or were pleading with their parents to buy them a Yatterman toy. Thinking that there was nothing much for him to do on that floor, Sho was about to proceed to the next when he spotted someone in the corner.

That man wasn’t with a kid, nor did he look like he was interested in buying any of his products. That man was simply staring at a Yatterman Live Action Movie poster, apparently lost in thoughts.

Slowly, Sho approached his customer. It was only when Sho was two steps away from that man when he noticed how familiar that man’s hair looked, “Ninomiya?”

Upon hearing his name, the said man whipped around. No words were exchanged as both men looked at each other, clearly dumbfounded by the other’s presence. If the other people around them weren’t busy playing, they would surely have stared at the pair and wondered why two grown up men were staring at each other in a toy store.

“I should go,” said Nino eventually.

Before the smaller man could take even one step, his path was blocked by a muscular shoulder, “Can I talk to you, Ninomiya-san?”

“Does it involve Aliens and a certain stone?” asked Nino, looking at the floor.

“It might,” answered Sho truthfully.

Seeing the green light when Nino nodded, Sho enthusiastically grabbed the other man’s hand, completely missing the slight blush on the other man’s face, and led him out of the store.
