Interesting study linking alcoholism and the effect it can have on other family members physically.

Why does it affect women more than men?  Is it because our default comfort mode is food?

All I know is that I have a brother who is a recovering alcoholic, and my sister is obese (she has always liked the best in life).  I have been known to comfort

Not everyone uses food for comfort. There was a WSJ article on a protein that can be a marker for people that eat for comfort. It occurs in less than 50% of the population.
