Well, he hadn't come from the Hold or Crafthall so staying with the Weyr seemed like the best option. Ugh, but staying where everyone knew he'd been rejected...
It wasn't like he could run away. Apparently there were aliens that fell from the sky and ate everything they could.
"You're welcome." Z'lan didn't miss the little frown but figured it was nerves. All the candidates were nervous about things. He had been when he was a candidate.
Hannibal hadn't even considered the notion that he'd be found acceptable to the riders on Search, once some of his new friends at the Hold had explained what was happening. He was an interloper here, after all. He was grateful enough to have been given a place at all. But now, now he was being offered a chance at the greatest honor the land had, apparently. It excited him, too. Dragonriders helped people, they protected the land. It was what he wanted to do. It was the closest thing they had here to his old life in the Rangers. One of the men at the Hold had suggested that Hannibal try for an apprenticeship at a Crafthall, seeing how skilled he was at constructing things, though he'd followed it with a laugh about how old Hannibal was. He took it in good form, though. If he didn't Impress, he might try that
( ... )
"A fire lizard will choose whoever feeds it. If it doesn't get fed, it'll find its own way." Z'lan shrugged. It was difficult to explain Impression without going through it.
"The dragon will choose you and Impression is for a lifetime. If the dragon dies, the rider does too. If the rider dies, so does the dragon. You are one being with your dragon."
He nodded solemnly. He had already discovered the deep connection with his fire lizard, and dragons were so much more. Mago gave a disgruntled chirp from his shoulder. "Shhh, little guy," he murmured softly, rubbing his head. "I promise I won't stop loving you." Once the lizard was settled again, though, Hannibal looked up at Evreth in admiration.
Lyle hovered close to Hannibal, nervous as hell. How had he been selected for this? What would he do with a dragon? Why would a dragon want him? This was just too freaking weird. So, yeah, maybe he'd gotten used to Mago flitting around. But still. He was tiny. Not big enough to bite someone's head off. Even though they all said dragons wouldn't do that. Lyle wasn't sure he believed them.
Darvish flashed a wry grin as he looked around the chamber. He felt slightly awkward, towering above most of the other candidates--most were children, after all, and he was tall for a man grown. Though that older man seemed like he'd give Darvish a run for his money, and possibly even beat him.
He was still surprised that he was there. After all, why should the dragons think a worthless drunk a valid candidate for one of them? The more time he'd spent around them, the more his admiration grew.
Though, come to think of it, he'd been keeping himself busy enough that he'd barely missed the wine, only having a few days of sickness in his time here. It felt... strange to have a purpose. But... very, very nice.
Peter drew in a slow breath as he listened to the man talk. It was like something straight out of a freaking comic book. So, apparently, he had to get dressed up and impress a dragon or something?
He glanced sideways at the man next to him, a tall guy with strong features, and gave him a nervous smile. "So uh...dragons." What would Nathan say if he saw him like this? Talking to strange men and learning about a completely different world?
He'd probably slap Peter around and tell him to come back to reality. But no matter how many times Peter splashed his face with water, he didn't wake up. Pinching himself had proven futile, too. This was his reality now, and he was going to learn to live it to the fullest until he could get home. Having a dragon-thing to look after sounded very important, and Peter wanted to be important here.
Darvish chuckled softly, looking down at the man. "Magnificent, aren't they? We don't have anything like them in my land." He shrugged his broad shoulders awkwardly. "I hope that they find me acceptable." It was a faint hope, since even his family did not.
"We don't have them where I live, either. Well we did at one point..they were called Dinosaurs but they became extinct and...eh. Doesn't matter. I haven't seen one before now." He shifted awkwardly. "I'm Peter."
Once people started to disperse and Peter had thoroughly mingled with Darvish, he glanced around and made his way over to Z'lan. Might as well meet the guy in charge, right?
"Hi. Um, I'm Peter. I don't think we've formerly met but I've seen you around a lot." The Empath extended his hand to Z'lan, clearly nervous. He was never very confident around authority figures and Peter blamed his brother for that.
He smiled gently and nodded his head as they shook hands. "Well met to you too. I don't want to sound like a kid or anything but this stuff is pretty overwhelming. Are you sure I'm supposed to be here...?"
"Dragons, especially blues and greens, make excellent Search dragons. They sense in you the potential to be a dragonrider." He reached behind him and patted Evreth's shoulder. He knew it would be there. "You were Searched, you belong here."
Dani hung around at the back of the group. Allegro was tucked into her hair, eyes darting from person to person, trying to decide who was most dangerous. She kept sending reassuring vibes, but the little guy didn't like crowds at all.
She listened to the speech, sort of excited and a little scared. They picked her and she didn't have any clue why. She thought she was normal again since she'd lost her Pushing abilities. Now they were saying she could be something special again. Being a dragonrider looked safe though and well, the dragon's were cool. Really cool. She wanted one badly.
After talking to Hannibal, Lyle screwed up some courage and wandered around the room a bit. "Uh, hey," he said, smiling shyly. He had to get to know the people around here sometime, since it didn't look like he'd be getting home.

"Thanks," he said with a little frown.

Evreth rumbled, pleased with the description.
