Arigatou (Thank You)
It’s winter - dark and chilly. But in his four-wheel drive, Takki feels a contrasting warmth. His passenger seat is occupied.
‘Hey, Odaiba Beach is just round the corner, right?’
‘Yep.’
‘Let’s stop there for a while.’
………….
The crisp night air bites his nose and stings his ears. But Takki endures.
Silently watching the Rainbow Bridge from the shore, the cold seems to slowly freeze away, leaving behind unexplainable warmth in his heart. Not wanting to be the only one smiling, Takki turns to his companion. There’s an unmistakable smile there too - a quiet joy that mirrors his own.
‘Arigatou.’
‘Eh? You said something?’
‘No. Nothing.’
Takki is easily embarrassed and manly pride forbids him from repeating such a sentiment. Besides, what was he thankful for? For having someone by his side and in his heart?
‘Achoo!’
‘You cold?’
‘No... just allergic to you.’
‘Ooi!’
After a few mock punches, Takki unwraps the woolen scarf around his neck.
‘Sometimes I can’t believe you’re older than me. You still can’t take care of yourself.’
Carefully, he wraps his scarf snuggly around the neck of his sneezing companion. Without protest, the slightly taller man obediently accepts the chiding and pampering.
‘Arigatou (Thank you).... iro iro arigatou (thank you for everything).’
For a moment, in that broken silence, with Tsubasa in his heart and by his side, this winter night feels like summer.
