I Don’t Know Many Things

‘Green?! He wore green?!’ Takki exclaimed to himself.

He loved that colour, but only on trees. Still, Tsubasa looked great in it. It seemed the fashionista could do no wrong.

It was Tsubasa’s 28th birthday and they were celebrating it in a private room of a fancy Korean restaurant. Takki made sure that the room was packed with friends, colleagues, well-wishers, even Tatsumi. Like most birthday parties, everyone indulged in a little too much fun and had a little too much to drink. Reminiscence of the past soon dominated the conversation, peppered with embarrassing details.

Tsubasa being the birthday boy of course bore the brunt of the teasing. But since everyone was in such high spirits, he took them in his stride, smiling and nodding good-naturedly to all of the revelations of his less-than-glamorous moments.

With all the insistent toasts being offered, the birthday boy was soon drunk enough to start molesting his guests. He was planting sloppy kisses on anyone he could lay his hands on. So it was with much relief that he finally left to sober up in the gents.

Takki was feeling the effect of the alcohol too and was ready to sweet-talk someone into feeding him drinks. But seeing that his preferred victim was absent, he too made way for the restroom.

In the gents, Tsubasa was staring at himself in the mirror, with water still trickling down his somber face.

‘You okay?’

‘I don’t know. I’m 28. It sounds so old.’

‘But you don’t look old. Shave off that hige and you’ll look like that dorky kid that I first saw at the audition,’ Takki slyly suggested, determined to rid that out-of-place hige.

‘Really, I still look like that kid?’

‘In my eyes you were always that kid, that kid that I strangely fell… Gosh, even I’m getting sentimental. Must be all that nostalgia,’ Takki laughed nervously. Feigning awkwardness, he quickly stopped himself before revealing too much.

‘Damn alcohol... just makes you wanna to spill everything,’ Takki cursed under his breath.

Tsubasa smiled a bittersweet smile.

‘How long has it been?’ he absent-mindedly asked.

Takki was about to answer that very straightforward question when he was stumped by Tsubasa’s next question?

‘How long will it be?’

Takki was startled by the question. But it was not alien to him. He had asked himself that too. Their unit had been very quiet for the past year. No, not quiet. Dead. He couldn't understand why and even Mr Kitagawa-san refused to explain why he was cold-storaging them.

Leaning on the cold wall tiles for support, Takki let the pregnant silence grow. Question of their survival as a unit was the first and foremost on his mind. But was Tsubasa also implying something else in that question?

They had been friends for a very long time, maybe too long. Maybe it was time to take the next step. How long more was he going to let all those tender feelings and burning desires go unspoken. While the world may keep them separated, was he too going to keep them apart?

With a heavy sign, Takki confessed.

‘I don’t know many things... but I know I love you.’
