MY EAS HAS BEEN POSTED.

Jul 06, 2006 14:34

I get out on 31 July.

I need a job. Anybody know of any short term contracts in the D.C. area that go from August through the end of September? Anybody have any leads in the Seattle area (long term and starting in October) for an IT guy with a secret clearance, no degree, and five years of tech experience that's two years old?

work, usmc

Well sure, but I was kind of hoping for a spot of friendly nepotism to maybe get 'hooked up' ;) Actually I'm not sure I've checked craigslist in the last few months, though I have been browsing dice and monster every couple weeks or so. I had been waiting on messing with my resume until I had a solid date for getting out.

Oh, and these are open positions at the Seattle Times:

IT
Finance/HR IT Manager 05-150/BD
Lead Systems Administrator 06-166/MS *NEW as of 6/20/06
Project Analyst 05-217/SW
SAP Configuration Analyst 06-086/MS
SAP Configuration Analyst 06-128/MS
Senior Project Analyst 06-179/MS *NEW as of 6/30/06

Let me know if you want any more info on any of them.

The only thing there I'd really qualify for is Lead Systems Administrator, but like I said, I haven't been doing IT for the last two years, nothing challenging or very close with any frequency for the last four, and don't have a degree. That doesn't make me particularly competitive for that sort of position. I'll probably have to start out in a more junior to mid level position to get my head wrapped around the beast again. I may try and get some up to date certifications depending on time and money factors. Basically I'd be asking for somebody to take a huge risk on me for that kind of position. I have outstanding references and know what it takes to make IT work (essentially has more to do with analytical and organizational skills than memorization of how the 7 layer OSI model works or the exact syntax for an apache config file), but I think with the way the job market is these days, I will be asking them to go out on a limb even with a more junior position given my lack of a college degree or recent experienece ( ... )

Might want to try to hook up with Microsoft while up there? One of my friends works for them and loves them.

Oops, forgot to add this part:

As far as nepotism goes, Eliot now lives in CA and works for Microsoft so I'm not sure what kind of contacts he has up in Seattle any more. :/

Hmm... it would be something to consider... if I can't find something else (and they'd take me - see reasons above). Of course, there's still the latent linux/oss geek inside that would shudder to be so affiliated with Microsoft, even though I've administered and used their products for years :P

I know, but remember Joc works for AOL and her geekery is still unchallenged!

Also, as far as temp work goes, you might see if they have a Kelly Services temp agency in DC -- I've had a 3 week job and now I have a job that's lasting for 5 weeks this summer. The money's pretty good, even if my branch is full of weinies. Better luck in DC?

Fired off email to my friend out there. He's actually in Canby Oregon, but he's also in touch with a lot of our fellow former Marines in the Northwest area.

I have a brother who lives/works in Seattle too. He's not a computer guy (he's into film-making), but he might know of some opportunities in Seattle as well.

I'll let ya' know if I hear anything back.

Thanks, I do appreciate it. A lot of that was actually meant to catch your attention, but I figured if you didn't respond, we'd chat over a beer sometime in the next couple months ;)

I figured maybe that was the case, and I am always up for a beer or two.

Just FYI, Todd emailed me back already. If you've got a resume put together, pass it along to me so I can send to him? Or, if you want you can check out his website stafney.com. He's got contact info there too.

Turns out he just accepted a position just east of Seattle, so he'll be working up there too.

YAY! Hey honey, I'm betting your best bet out here would probably be temp agencies. When you come home this weekend we can work on your resume. :) I love you!

I love you too sweetheart. I already have my resume together in a presentable form, though of course I'm always willing to accept constructive criticism. I've applied for one short term contract in the D.C. area so far, am looking for more.

My friend Todd asked what sort of positions/work Adam would like to find. So definitely help him with the resume. :)

Todd suggested checking out http://seattle.craigslist.org/sad/ and apparently he's got a recruiter he's worked with that moved last year to the Seattle area that Todd might be able to hook Adam up with to help find something.

I certainly wish you guys luck!
