Honestly, I think the fandom's cooled off more since the beginning of Korra (more accurately: since episode six or so) than it did in the interim before it.

Well I used to be extremely active on the Distant Horizon forums during Avatar's initial run and that board was always on fire with posts, theories, activities and contests. On the night of the 4 Part finale there was a record number online and even live commenting on what was going on. Then when the series ended, people just backed off, so for me it was really apparent. But yeah, I wasn't really talking about on livejournal specifically, just around the internet. Totally natural, for sure, but still it would be fun to get involved in something, if only for a little while..

This. Plus I think it had to do a lot with the way fandom sort of 'split' over this past year. Like first there was LJ, and then came tumblr... so that drew a chunk of people away, especially since ATLA's always been a visual-oriented fandom since, you know, it's a cartoon. That's not to say that other aspects like fic and whatnot aren't as big or important, but just that you get a lot more people drawing cartoons of cartoons vs books or movies.

And then Korra came along and caused another split at about the same time because now you've got Korra communities with new updates and new fans and just new life, and at first people are trying to crosspost to everything, but after awhile there's just too much, so they stick to just one. The streams cut off a bit more to the older comms, and when the season ends the new fans sort of go into hibernation, the old ones go into a bit of a funk since they're all like "hey! i thought everything was just getting started", and things seem even deader than they were before since - well - like I ( ... )

Still, I'm wondering if any one else would find it entertaining to create some sort of system where avatar_fans could be given to a Nation and an element based on both their personality, preferred style of attack (because we all know all the Bending is based off of different martial arts), beliefs, etc.

that's been done before when the community was young. ATLA_Land has done that with various people being organized into elemental teams.

This is in contrast to other fandoms which seem to thrive no matter what, such as Harry Potter, though admittedly Harry Potter has much more massive amounts of media, exposure, etc. Honestly though, the Avatar universe is one of the coolest in existence, so I don't quite understand that.Bing bing. Harry Potter is more media exposure it's a megafandom. It's still getting exposure and massive amounts of fandom activity. The Avatar community doesn't have that kind of force because it doesn't have massive hold on the media and pop culture. It's actually a good thing, those kinds of fandoms are a lot ( ... )

Hm, I hadn't realized. But even if it had been, that doesn't mean much. It could still be done again. See though, I wasn't thinking teams, so much as for fun. It wouldn't have to mean anything. I guess the point would be to get to know a little more about fans and see how they really perceive the avatar universe ( ... )
