Read at your own risk. Sorry to make a new post for this, but I have a truckload to say and wish to have a discussion about a single subject.
Let me be clear on this to begin with: I like Jin. I think she's interesting and funny, so I have no issues with her character and I am not trying to be mean and negate the episode. Just follow me as I go waaay out on a limb here.
In the last episode, the Jet conflict took place, and the Dai Lee stepped in to "cure" Jet. But Zuko and Iroh were still the accused, said to be firebenders. The Dai Lee are serious business, and would more than likely research this even if it was from some crackpot kid.
And suddenly, Jin shows up at the tea shop every day, with an eye out for Zuko. She asks him on a date and to meet at SUNDOWN (this relates to the lanterns). They go out to eat, and throughout the dinner she asks him multiple questions involving his personal life and past. He makes various comments that would upset a normal girl (you have an appetite), but she ignores them and continues doing her own thing.
Afterwards, she drags him out to go to her favorite spot--a fountain lit by lanterns. But for some unknown reason, tonight they are not lit. She closes her eyes, and Zuko lights them all. After he gives her the tea coupon, she says "Your uncle is a great teacher".
Were the lanterns just bait for firebending? Why did she reference Iroh as a "teacher"?
I feel as though we are missing a bigger picture here--falling right into the trap of nothing but evaluating the personality of Jin and not the full situation. Naturally, I could (and probably will) end up completely wrong about this...but it's something no one else has mentioned, as far as I'm aware.
[also, Zuko suspected something at the beginning...]
