The dust covers her, the wind carries it up and into her face. She closes her eyes just for that split second it takes to let it settle.
She opens them, and there's nothing.
Nothing but dust, wind and the night.
-and the wooden stake in her hand.
"You're getting better at this." A male voice comments, but she doesn't answer. He's used to this little thing between them, she stakes the undead, he comments and she's silent as the death she delivers nightly. He continues regardless, "I never really thought someone like you, could ever be okay with doing something like this."
He knows her too well, and isn't surprised to see her turn to face him. Blue eyes blazing with fury and just a pinch of disgust. At him, his words or the whole situation; he'll never know because she'll never tell him.
"Shut up, Jeff." She snaps, arm locked to her side, but hand still gripping her weapon.
He's silent for a moment, taking her in. She's changed so much, and it hurts. Then again, so has everything else. Her, him and the whole god damn world turned it's self upside down and inside out. He really shouldn't expect her to stay the same, she wouldn't have survived this far if she hadn't adapted, hadn't broken down and rebuilt.
-but that doesn't mean he doesn't miss the old her. With beaming smiles and Disney eyes, focused on her future, that was so bright she'd have to wear shades.
"Remember when your biggest concern was making dioramas for-"
She cuts him off, "-don't Jeff." her voice small and flat.
He hates that she doesn't have that future now. Hates that the world went to hell in a flaming hand basket post haste to Satan himself, and made her the delivery girl. She doesn't deserve this fate, this so called calling, to save this fallen world. To banish and destroy all the evil, all the monsters, spooks and boogey men.
The worst bit is that she can't. Every day more, and more evil rises up to consume her whole. The fact is, she knows it, knows and can't do a damn thing but patrol and slay, and wake up and repeat.
-and god help him, against every fiber of his being, he wants to make it stop. Wants to take the stress, pressure and pain off her delicate shoulders. If only she'd let him, he would.
"Britta says hello." she tells him, as she stomps around a grave. When she first started, she was so careful, not to walk over anyone's grave. Now she knows that's foolish, most of them are empty anyways.
"How is she?"
Annie shrugs, "She's okay. She just broke up with her boyfriend...Dylan."
"The werewolf boy?"
Annie ducks her head a bit, smiling so he can't see. "He's older than you."
"So what, did she get tired of him clogging up her drains with fur or was it the dog breath?"
Annie stops at one grave, and waits. Jeff doesn't question why. He knows.
"No, last full moon he ate her cat. That was it, she kicked him out."
"Poor Fluffykins."
Jeff can't help the smirk that formed on his lips, it didn't waver even when she caught it and frowned. He shrugs, and she goes back to staring down at the now slightly moving grass.
Under the dirt, something is clawing it's way free.
Free into the darkness, only to be slain by a cute, little Annie Edison Vampire Slayer.
Personally, Jeff thinks there are worst ways to die.
"What about the others?"
"Troy and Abed are fine. Abed it turns out, is really smart at this whole demon research thing."
Jeff doesn't ask about the Shirley, who left months ago with her sons or Pierce who was currently in Greendale Hospital. They tend not to talk about things that are on the verge of breaking, preferring to stick to safer subjects.
"Have they asked about me?" He asks, just as the fledgling pops out, clawing into the air. Annie grabs the dirty hand, pulls him out and stabs him in the heart. The creature doesn't even get to suck in air before he's dust.
"Abed does. Sometimes. He wonders why you don't stop by more often."
Jeff's brow raises at bit, not knowing what to make of this info. "Yeah well, no one but you has really talked to me, and even then I have to practically stalk you. Why don't you ever visit me."
Annie just looks at him and softly answers, "You're a vampire, Jeff. What do you expect?"
"I have an apartment, not a crypt. So yeah, house-warming gifts maybe? A party?" He jokes.
Annie smiles, it's small and not nearly like the ones of the past, but he'll take what he can get.
"Maybe, one day."
He smirks, "I've got all the time in the world."
