Edits/changes for my article on bouncers for the January 8, 2009 cover story of the SD Reader. To promote the story and the Reader, I will be making morning news appearances on local FOX, NBC,

Remind us when the Carver book comes out. More and more of America is beginning to look like characters from his stories.

The operative word here is "more." As in more people cobbling together sort of a life with multiple jobs, not having a reliable car, getting desperate, etc.

Toss in the alcoholism, the infidelity, the out of control children, being "between lives," the black humor, the pies on the ground, going bankrupt, and skipping out on the landlord late at night.

Actually, Carver's ex-wife Maryann told me too many people have romanticized his blue collar working life, ignoring that he often worked in university libraries -- this is where he found literary journals to submit his work to.

He also did well as a white collar textbook editor, where he moved to the publicity department and learned savvy publicity moves, like getting United Airlines to give me free tix to Iowa and Santa Cruz and back, where he held two jobs, unknown to both schools, which was a no-no. He told United he'd mention their airline in his stories, which he never did. Like that'd work today!
