I can totally identify with you. That kind of thing along with incorrect grammar bugs the heck out of me. Were they asleep in school? Were they never corrected by a parent or a teacher? Did anyone care? Now, in my old age, I come right out and correct the person. They should know that they are making themselves look like they never took an english class. I even corrected the shoe salesman at Nordstrom the other day. He said 'these ones'. ARGH. I told him that 'these' takes the place of 'the ones here' so all he had to say was just 'these' and leave off the 'ones'. When he did it again, he corrected himself. Now, he'll probably never forget that a customer corrected him but I'll also bet he never says 'these ones' again either. Another few that really get me are, 'I didn't do NOTHING wrong', 'HIM and HER have a new car', 'I should have WENT', 'it is for HE and I'. Talk about grating.

Hmmmm, I don't think that first example is incorrect... catherinew October 28 2009, 20:45:32 UTC
I also love grammar (too much)... My understanding is that "these ones" is not an incorrect usage.

"This" and "these" are demonstratives that can be used either as replacements for the noun ("these"), or as modifiers to the (pro)noun ("these houses," "these ones").

The usage "these ones" is not incorrect -- it's just using "these" as a demonstrative determiner, rather than as a demonstrative pronoun. Other languages have separate words for those two functions, but English uses "this," "these," and "that" for both functions.

Could it have been someone who's native tongue involved a lingual development that makes that sounds more difficult to naturally pronounce? Or was there any indicator of a speech impediment for which just being able to make the 'th' as in 'they' a great personal victory for the speaker?
