Storms a'coming

Sep 12, 2008 10:17

I've been pretty flippant the past few days about Hurricane Ike.  It's the fourth hurricane that's ventured near Houston in the past few months and despite dire warnings and apocalyptic predictions the first three were complete duds, barely made a dent in the weather.

So it was a little like the boy who cried wolf when talk of Ike began.

But now, it' ( Read more... )

Hey! I've been thinking about you the last couple of days and hoping you weather the storm all right. I'm a bit further inland here in NC than you are in Houston, but we get fallout from hurricanes from time to time and sometimes it gets pretty scary, like, trees falling on the house scary. I hope Ike won't be too nasty to you. I suspect all the hyperbole in the warnings is basically ass-covering. So many officials were caught with their pants down over Katrina that the pendulum has now swung the other way. Anyway, I'll be watching for news for your sake--and also for my nephew. (He actually loves it when hurricanes and bad storms hit because it makes the surfing better!)

Good luck!

I've been told that since Katrina people want to be 'informed' about what might be coming. There's informed and there's scaring the crap out of people and I think the media tend toward the latter.

But Ike looks like it might have some power. How much, I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

I'll be interested to hear if the hurricane has any effect your way.

Hey Mel. I'm trying to locate your phone number to check in on you. Can you email it to me?? We've been watching the weather channel here. I had no idea Houston was so close to the coast. I hope you've been able to batten down all your hatches!!!!!

I know there is a fine line between telling people how it is and scaring the hell out of them. From what I've seen it looks like its pretty intense. If you've got to leave head towards Georgia and we'll take good care of you. Keep safe!!!

Hey Kat. Thanks for the words of support.

We just had our power flicker so I think we're going to lose electricity soon. Thankfully I made dinner early.

We just got a call from the council that we are under curfew, so I guess all we can do is sit tight now.

I'll email you when it's all over (and when power resumes) and let you know how we get on.

Hey Mel, been thinking about you the last day or so, whenever Ike is mentioned on the news here. Hope you and the boys stay safe.

Good luck :).

thanks Jodie. The hurricane has past, the cable is reconnected and it's back to situation normal.

Sounds like the hurricane got talked up big in Australia. I'm getting concerned emails from everyone. But it was no worse than some of the intense storms we have in Aus. Some downed branches, tiles off the room and the pool is going to take some time to clean.

Heh. I think it's the word "hurricane" more than anything - because that sounds so much more exotic than big-arse storm. Still, I saw a picture in this morning's paper taken from the International Space Station of Ike - it was huuuge (Ike, not the picture!)

Glad you made it through OK. And if the cable is back on, all is right with the world - especially since Supernatural starts next week! Can't have the cable down for that :).

Yeah the word hurricane was freaking me out as well, I really didn't know what to expect. But now I have an measure for the next time, when they talk about a category 2 hurricane I'll know what they're talking about and just how panicked to get.

Hey chocca.

We made it through the hurricane unscathed. It was the poor buggers on the coast who copped it hard. We're about an hour inland and it was bloody windy, but no real damage.

But thanks for your concern. Ike must be getting huge press coverage across the world because I've had family and friends calling and emailing, really worried about us.
