My husband and I are Americans who have been living in New Zealand for a few years. Although I like NZ, my OH is a bit restless here, and I am fine with moving, so we are considering a move either back to the states (probably Oregon) or across the Tasman. If we choose Oz, it looks like the Melbourne area would be the best option for a left-leaning ( Read more... )

Melbourne! I live in Brisbane bu have been meaning to get my behind down to Melbourne for years now. Brisbane is no cheaper rent-wise anymore and Melbourne has many more of the benefits you get from living in a city, it's such a wonderful place for a left-leaning vegan imo. Though of course i don't have direct experience with living there, i've only visited & fallen in love with the place :).

Defnitely Melbourne. Best quality of life in general, and best city for veggies.

Perth (where I am originally from, I now live in Melbourne), is a lovely place to live, excellent beaches and a relaxed pace of things, but isn't a veggie haven and is very isolated from the rest of the capital cities. And Perth isn't much cheaper to live in than Melbourne, anymore.

You might consider Hobart or somewhere else in Tasmania - Tassie is known for its natural scenery and is popular with greenies, and it is smaller and cheaper than Sydney or Melbourne. And it's close enough to Melbourne and Sydney that you can make a few trips a year over to the mainland to appreciate the veg places.

When you say 'smaller', how much smaller? I live in Tasmania... Not the most vegan friendly place (in terms of restaurants + shops and such) but might be worth checking out.

Melbourne is a great place though.

I may be coming in too late here. Anyway ...

If you like small cities, I'd go for Canberra. (I've lived in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra.) The population is 300,000, so it's nothing like Washington DC! More like Wellington. It's surrounded by pretty mountains, plus two mountains right in the city itself. And because it's the capital of a largish country it's got more going on than most NZ cities, although of course much less than Sydney or Melbourne. More than anywhere in Tasmania, though. There are a couple of really good vegan restaurants and an active Animal Liberation group.
