we don't have snow in portland, but lots of it on mount hood, an hour a way. this way, i don't have to shovel, like i did in new hampshire (that was just evil - 8 feet of snow my last winter there), but i can still enjoy snowshoeing, which i love.
the whole wildfire thing would freak me out a bit, and has kept me out of places like nevada and california, where they're quite common.

Most people in Perth (probably like most people in L.A.) don't even think about bush fires. The worst thing they probably suffer each year is a little smoke inhalation, with their suburban homes (clustered in the middle of dozens/hundreds of identical suburban homes) never really at any major risk.
Jo and I choose to live in "the hills" area of Perth, because the trees are still here, the bush is still here, the people who walk past us when we're walking our dog (kd) literally say "G'day" or "How-ya-goin'?", they give us eye contact.... and in typical aussie fashion they don't give a flyin'-fig that we're two women!:o) The down-side of being in the hills though, is the risks associated with bush fires. That is why I joined the Brigade.... I am, by nature (speaking in the physical sense) quite a fearful and cautious person. I literally HATE that adrenalin rush thing you get when your stomach feels like it just dropped a few inches, your heart starts wanting to pound out of ( ... )
