First off, I'm not gonna lie -- I loved this episode.  I never feel that the premieres are all that strong, and my favourite till this point (besides 'Pilot', of course) was 'A Tale of Two Cities'.

Oh I think Ben can easily live to and past the final episode.

And about his eyes...lol...did you notice in that scene where Smokey was explaining himself to Ben, the starting of a glint in Ben's eyes? Almost like "this is an opportunity". he's not with it, bless him...he's broken and crushed...but that little glint there gave me hope that he's slowly going to start pulling himself together.

Smokey obviously still needs Ben. And I like that. Besides...I always disliked Jacob anyway.

As for Sayid - I want him to die and stay dead. He's one of the characters I really really dislike - probably because of what he's done to Ben! I get protective over our little Benji...

I want Ben to live past the final episode, and obviously anything can happen. I just don't think he will.

I actually didn't notice the glint, but I'll look for it on my next viewing of the episode! I really don't think Ben will ever pull himself together again, though, because I've always thought that Alex's death destroyed him.

As for Sayid...I haven't liked him all that much for a long time. Here and there I'll think, 'yes, this was why he used to be my favourite character!' And actually, I felt that way in the flash-sideways. Ever since Shannon died it's like the writers haven't really known what to do with him. And obviously YMMV on that.

LOL Well I think it crushed Ben - but I don't think Alex's death destroyed him. It'll take him time - and he'll never be the same as he was - but he'll be back.

I'm hoping the glint wasn't wishful thinking on my part but it DID seem like Ben's brain kicked into gear a tiny bit then. At the moment, he's being buffetted every which way - as well as dealing with the fact that Smokey has manipulated HIM.

I shall, however, be very disappointed in the writers if they leave Ben in this bad place he's in.

Maybe, but it's been two years for him and he still hasn't got over it. At least in my opinion. I'm not sure we'll ever see the Ben who was in control of everything around him again.

Which is not to say that we'll never see him be droll or snarky again, but I don't believe he'll ever get back to the place he was in during seasons 2 and 3.

I really enjoyed reading your review and agree with many of your points. I do have a few questions, but will have to come back later and ask them.

Well, the parallel timeline erases everything that happened after the plane crashed. Also, without the island exerting its effect on their lives, presumably the characters have led different ones...

Obviously it erases nothing for the island timeline. :) I think they'll merge at some point as well. I have absolutely no idea what that will entail, though!

Ooh, I forgot about Jin not understanding English. That's another of my favourite things that they've done.

What do you mean Terry was sort of playing Locke?

I mean he's still using many of the same inflections and tics that made Locke who he was, but there's something different about it at the same time. He's doing a good job of playing someone inhabiting Locke's body, basically (even though technically it's not Locke's body).

I... pretty much agree with everything you said, starting from the Other Others being kinda *meh*. How many leaders and sub-leaders do they have ( ... )

How many leaders and sub-leaders do they have?

I know. And I recognise that for me it's just that I don't want new characters, especially new Others, when the old Others were my favourites. It won't stop me from complaining, though!

I loved how Miles has developed some kind of hero worship of Sawyer XD He keeps calling him "boss", who would have told in S4?

Haha, so true. I also noticed that Kate was really grabby when it came to Miles in this ep, and how their first interaction was him shouting that he'd kill her if she and Jack didn't tell him where Naomi's body was.

I got the impression that Sun was once again making an act of not knowing English so she had an excuse to just dump Jin there.Yeah, I'm wondering about that too. Do you think Jin had the money because he was planning on disappearing into America to get away from Paik ( ... )

I don't think Ben is as defeated as people seem to think he is. He has always been very good at making himself look vulnerable when in fact, he is secretly rallying (or preparing to get what he wants in some oblique way). Right now I think he's trying hard to work things out in his mind, and is acting accordingly: keeping out of trouble, hedging his bets, saying as little as possible to anyone until he knows which direction to jump in. He's extremely adaptable, and doesn't let his feelings of guilt get in the way of survival...

I think the only time he really made himself look vulnerable when he wasn't was while he was captured in the Swan. He is good at surviving, and I'm sure he'll find some way to prolong his existence, but he's just not in control of anything right now. He'll not regain the same kind of control he had before, in my opinion.
