something to be said for a day job

Jul 19, 2009 12:27

Finished my 100th book of the year the other day, A Disobedient Girl. You'd think that with so much time on my hands lately, what with being unemployed, I'd be able to read so much more. But I bloody hate not working, and sitting down with a book makes me feel so guilty I can barely concentrate ( Read more... )

It's sad isn't it? We work hard all our lives to attain this elusive "retirement" golden age, and when we get there we're so worn-out and disease-ridden and have no friends or hobbies ... Sorry. Been a bit depressed lately. I just wish I could make the most of this!

It's the same with me and knitting or sewing - I want to do it all now too!

Pity you can't be paid for reading books!

Isn't it a pity? I do get some free books but it's not quite the same!

It sucks, doesn't it, the unemployment guilt. You're pretty sure it will be okay, but you just don't know. And then, when you do get that job you look back and go, 'why didn't I value that time off!'...

I LOVE that you say you don't read as much as you used to while reading as much as you do! I wish I could read as much as you do now...

MILs.... I hear ya! (Grrrrr).

*Cheats and jumps on sister's comment to say "ditto".*
...Except the MIL bit. I mean, I hear ya, but can't empathise. I've got one crazy mother. I don't need two ;)

Thanks youse *hugs*

(I think I've been spoiled by having such a great non-crazy mother; I never expected to be one of those women who don't get along with their mother-in-law, really I didn't. Mostly it means that in private, Adam and I vent for hours. HOURS! Not so healthy...)

(It all sounds so familiar now!! Your Dad's doing a lot of venting!)

Yeah, I remember the unemployment guilt--spend the day job hunting, fruitlessly, and decide to try and relax with a book (or the internet), but the worry/guilt eats at you and you can't enjoy it.

I sympathize with the while MIL thing--the worst I've had to put up with is my sister's stupid boyfriends. God that's enough for me.

It's like the world's conspiring against you ;)

Hm. Considering that there's five of us siblings, we've been pretty lucky that none of us have hated a sibling's partner or anything. Never thought of it before!

The slower the reader, the more the frustration/anxiety you feel over not getting to most of the books on your shelf. At least you read quickly! I have the hardest time choosing what to read next - the book club is the only thing that helps in this regard, because it's essentially picked for me.

I have the hardest time choosing too - especially with nearly 500 books to choose from - so the book club and ARC books get read first because I don't have to decide. Once they're out of the way though... Ugh. So hard to choose!

As an aside, we both felt pretty much the same way about A Disobident Girl. I love your description about the Sri Lankan landscape being outlined but not coloured in. Perfectly described, IMO.

Thanks Chris :) I confess I was disappointed by the book. These kinds of stories about young women in other countries growing up can be a bit hit and miss can't they.
