Chapter 1  |  Chapter 2  |  Chapter 3Chapter 4 |  Chapter 5  |  Chapter 6  |  Chapter 7

Chris felt the blood rush past his ears, he couldn’t hear anything else, he saw the doctor’s lips move, saw Jensen and Steve looking at him anxiously, but he couldn’t get past the fact that he and Jared now have a little girl. Their baby was a girl, their daughter was fighting for her life in some cold and sterile room by herself, so small and young and already the big bad world was against her. Chris just wanted Jared. He wanted to be able to take his lover and his baby and leave the hospital, never come back to this place. He wanted everything to be right again. He needed it to be alright.

Chris stood from his seat, pushing past the doctor, Steve and Jensen and just started walking. He didn’t know where he was going, but he needed out. He needed to catch his breath and find himself again, there was just too much going on right now and he didn’t know how much more he could handle.

Distantly, Chris registered the fact that the three people he left behind were calling after him, but he didn’t stop, he just kept walking until they were out of sight and out of hearing range before sinking to the floor randomly in a corridor. He buried his head in his hands, and for the first time since Jared was brought into the hospital, Chris wept.

Jensen and Steve watched as their friend walked away, this new piece of news was great, a little girl! But it also made everything more real, she was a little baby girl who might not even be alive or live through the night.

“Should someone go after him?” Dr Slade asked.

“Nah, give him some time, tell us though, how’s Jared?” Steve said, knowing that his friend would be using this time to pull himself back together, to make himself strong once more for Jared and their baby.

“Of course,” Dr Slade said softly. “Now, I did say Jared was alive and hanging in there, but he isn’t doing so well,” she said getting right to the point, knowing that beating around the bush wouldn’t be taken so lightly with this group of men, “he lost a large amount of blood, and with having trouble trying to locate the bleed and then to go ahead and repair it... What I’m trying to say is... well... there were some complications on the table,” Dr Slade explained, she didn’t know exactly how she was going to say the next part, delivering this kind of news was never easy, but it made it worse when the family and friends were at least double her in size. It was intimidating.

“How bad is it?” Jensen asked, worried about his best friend.

Dr Slade sighed before continuing, “Jared’s heart stopped while trying to repair the bleed, we lost him for a while, unfortunately, it seems that Jared has now slipped into a coma, we won’t know the full extent of it until the anaesthesia wears off and we are able to assess his brain activity properly, but from the looks of it we believe it could only be a light coma,” she said trying to sound positive.

Jensen and Steve let out a breath of air. Jared was out for the count and Chris was out of it. The two friends exchanged glances before Jensen spoke up once more. “Do you think we could see Jared? Maybe get Chris in soon?” Jensen asked, desperation obvious in his voice.

“I’ll do my best to get Jared moved to a room as fast as possible, but it could still take some time,” she said, “Is there anyone you boys wanted to call? Maybe get Jared’s family here or even Chris’?” she asked.

“Uh... No, Chris’ family isn’t exactly in the picture anymore... and well Jared’s... I don’t really know who was worse,” Jensen sighed, “no, there is no family to call for either man, at least not at this stage.”

Dr Slade nodded carefully, “okay then, you two take care of him,” she nodded in the direction Chris took off in, “and take care of yourselves,” she added before leaving.

Jensen and Steve collapsed back into the hard plastic chairs, the silence between them deafening. “We should probably try and get Chris back here,” Steve mumbled, Jensen absently nodding in agreement, however neither man moved from where they were.

Chris’ tears slowed until all that was left was the puffy feeling in his eyes. He scrubbed his hands into the sockets before pulling himself upright. Breathing in deeply, Chris stood up and brushed himself off, all the chinks in his armour now fixed, he felt ready to get back into the battle he was fighting for people he loved. He takes a small step off the wall and starts walking, he’s not too sure where he’d going, but he knows he still isn’t ready to face his friends yet. Chris lets his body dictate where he goes, not concerned with tracing his steps or remembering directions, and keeps walking until he bumps into a large display of flowers. Chris looks up and shakes himself out of his misery, blushing a little as he realises he’s attracted the attention of the young shop keeper.

Mumbling an apology he walks around the small shop, mindlessly looking around all the displays, there are ‘get well soon’, ‘my condolences’ and ‘congratulations’ cards as well as a large variety of flowers and an enormous number of toys and other little nicks and knacks littering the shop, and his fingers dance over each carefully. It all looks so cheap, nothing here could be purchased to make things better, he looks at the ‘it’s a girl’ cards and toys and sighs.

“Is there anything I can help you there with Sir?” the small girl asks carefully.

Chris looked at the girl thoughtfully for a moment, his thoughts slowly coming together in his head, “My... my boyfriend’s just had a baby, I have a daughter,” Chris whispered, his eyes widening as the words left his mouth, the sudden realisation of it having just hit him.

“Oh! Congratulations then! Do you know what you want to get them? I’m guessing one of each right, we can do flowers, maybe some food your partner likes? Or...”

“He’s in the ICU, and I still haven’t heard about my daughter, I... I don’t even know if she’s alive...” Chris said looking away from the fast speaking girl.

“Oh... gosh, I’m so sorry, well, I guess flowers and food is out... what about something like a little toy for your girl?” the young lady suggested, leading Chris back towards the toys.

She started talking rapidly again, pointing out all different sort of pink soft toys. Chris traced his fingers over the soft material, imagining just how spoilt his daughter will become with all the men crumbling at her every request. He was distantly aware of the shopkeeper talking behind him, but he wasn’t really listening anymore, he was lost in his thoughts, thinking about what he was going to do.

Chris’ eyes zoned in on two toys sitting off in a corner, they were a little rough around the edges and almost worst for wear but he immediately knew that those were the two he wanted. He scooped them up without hesitation and brought them towards the shopkeepers face.

“I want these two,” he said interrupting her rant about some pink thing.

“Oh... well... are you sure? They are two of our older toys, they must have been here for months now...” she hesitated.

“No, I’m sure, I want these,” he nodded, walking over to the register and waiting for the girl to follow.

The girl rang up the purchases quickly before wishing Chris well, handing the bag with the two toys over before turning away from the man. Chris smiled, he knew he could be difficult at times but the girl’s reaction towards his purchase was just amusing. He waved her off then walked out, finding his way back to Jensen and Steve.

Chris found his way back to the waiting room through the long, winding corridors, slowly walking up to his two friends who had their shoulders hunched. “Hey guys,” Chris mumbled, unsure of how his friends were going to react to him leaving.

Both Jensen and Steve jumped up, “Chris! Where have you been?” Steve asked straight away.

“Shopping?” he shrugged, holding up the paper bag.

Steve and Jensen sighed, “We spoke to the doctor after you left. She told us about Jared...” Jensen started.

Chris lost his smirk immediately, “What’s going on?” he asked in all seriousness.

Jensen quickly ran through all of Jared’s complications before explaining that the doctor was going to come back when he could see Jared. Jensen placed a hand on Chris’ arm once he finished explaining what the doctor had said, “Jared will be okay, you know that don’t you?” Jensen ensured.

“Yeah, of course he will be,” Chris nodded.

The men waited, no one asking to see what Chris had bought, as the oldest of the trio hugged the bag tightly against his chest. All were anxious for some news regarding either Jared or the baby. They whispered between each other, making plans for the future, none commenting on the fact that the future was so uncertain. None of the men noticed it when a young female doctor entered the waiting area.

“Family of Padalecki?” she called, looking down at her chart.

The three men looked up suddenly, all of them jumping to their feet without a moment’s hesitation, rushing up to the young doctor just as they had done to Dr Slade only a few hours ago.

“I’m Chris, Jared Padalecki’s partner, what’s this about? Is it Jared?” Chris asked urgently, immediately crowding the doctor’s personal space.

“Uh... Christian Kane, yes. I’m not Jared’s doctor, no. I’m Dr King, I treated your child, the only name we have for her at the moment is your partner’s though,” Dr King explained looking at her chart.

“What’s going on? How’s my baby?” Chris asked urgently, Jensen and Steve standing right behind him, also waiting to hear the news.

“If you would like to follow me, I can explain what’s happening in private,” she suggested looking around the busy room.

“Yeah, sure whatever, I just need to know what’s going on,” Chris replied.

“Do you want us with you?” Steve asked, holding Chris by his elbow.

“Of course guys, I wouldn’t be able to do this without you,” Chris nodded, dragging Steve and Jensen by their hands into the room the doctor had led them to.

“Sit down Christian, uh, I assume you two are relatives?” she said noticing Jensen and Steve walking in too.

“Sure, we’re Jared’s brothers,” Jensen lied easily.

“Right. Of course. Well, your baby was born 13 weeks prematurely, now as you may or may not know, with premature babies there are certain health issues which are likely to arise, and the younger your child is the more likely he or she is to get them. Now, don’t get me wrong, 27 weeks is okay, and your child has a fighting chance at surviving, but you are in for a long battle,” she started.

“Please, Dr King, I have my partner in the ICU, I have no idea where my baby even is, just tell me what is wrong with her!” Chris demanded.

“Okay, yes. Your baby had no breathing sounds when she was born, so we get her on the ventilator immediately, we suspect that she was only without oxygen for a few minutes, but we are still going to monitor her brain activity. It is common for infants this young to have what is known as respiratory distress syndrome, or RDS, which is a result of having immature lungs, we are treating this with a course of surfactants to help her lungs grow.

Your little one is also on a series of antibiotics as her immune system is also underdeveloped and infections and viruses are common, but this is also common with premature babies. She also can’t eat right now, not until at least 36 weeks, so she is being intravenous fluids though the IV. Also, since she is so young, we are keeping an eye out for a few different problems that can occur at such a young age, mainly haemorrhaging and other apnea, or breathing problems, but that is nothing to concern yourself with right now,” Dr King explained, watching the men in front of her take in all the information.

“But she is okay?” Steve asked, speaking when the other men couldn’t.

“Uh, for the moment, yes. She has a 90% chance of survival, however there are still many things that you all should be made aware of, I don’t want to bombard you with information right now, but there are also long term health issues that you should know about,” she said. “I can take you to the NICU, the neonatal intensive care unit, so that you can see her if you like? I can also explain what’s going on in regards to all the different equipment you will see around her incubator,” she offered.

“Chris?” Jensen prompted when Chris remained silent. “Do you want to see her?” he asked.

“I... No...” Chris said shaking his head. “No, Jared should be the first one to see her,” he said softly, causing everyone else in the room to fall silent.
