Let's inspire ourselves with pretty neg space ! I choose these ones, but I have tones of them saved. I learned a lot by watching others, so don't hesitate :)

Some of mine :

~ Progress
Originally, I have been requested this three icons :

But instead of recreating the first two and make a messy tutorial on the third (because the psd IS messy x'), I've decided to show you my technique with a simpler way, on two differents icons. I use this technique everytime I make neg space.

1) Make the backgroud (colors, maybe textures)
2) Make the coloring ((light) textures, gradients...)
3) Add contrast to the subject
4) End (light blobs, blur, sharpen)

Let's see it :).

»

1} We start with this picture because I'm lazy like that and I didn't want to spend time removing the background since it's not the point of this tut. I invite you to read this tutorial for that :). Remove the white background before pasting it on a new canvas.

2} Fill the background with #71a233 before our image's layer. Past this texture (by innocent_lexys) after the base as well and set it to Soft Light.

»

(ugh I'm sorry for that fucking pixel on the right T_T)

3} Duplicate your base and set it to Soft Light. Then I wanted a little movement, I duplicate the base twice, and put one under the original base. On both I applied Blur / Motion blur. I set them both to Soft Light.

»

4} Past this texture and set it to Soft Light. Then past this one and set it to Screen 50% opacity.

»

5} New file, Gradient #352503 to #cdc7bf, angle 20° set to Soft Light. New gradient black to white, angle 60°, set to Soft Light 60% opactiy.

»

6} Duplicate your base and drag it to the top. Set it to Soft Light and apply a light Glaussien Blur. Duplicate the base again, drag it to the top, desaturate it and set it to Soft Light. This step serves to add contrast on my image.

»

7} Time for light blobs ! What, you're surprised ? :D On a new transparent layer and with a soft brush, paint your light and shadow. Set the layer to Soft Light.

»

8} To finish, CTRL + ALT + SHIFT + E to merge all the layer together on a new one. Apply a Gaussian Blur of 14px and Hue / Saturation, saturation +50. Set it to Screen 50% opacity. Erase the part on your subject.

»

Sharpen and that's it !

 »

1} Starting with this picture again because I'm lazy x'). But Iron Man is really cool here, I love the colors. Remove the white background.

2} This texture (maker ??) will be our background. New file, color #202020 and set it to Soft Light. Take this texture (by tinebrella), I colored it in green with Hue / Saturation. Set it to Screen. On a new transparent file, I painted some part in black before setting it to Soft Light.

 »

3} Then I past my base. I add this texture set to Screen, opacity 50%.

 »

4} New file, gradient, #6b0000 to #d2ffaa, angle 25°, set to Soft Light.

 »

5} Set this texture to Screen and erase the part on Iron Man. Duplicate the base and drag it to the top. Blur it a little and set it to Screen 50% Opacity. Duplicate the base again, put it on the top and set it to Soft Light. This step serves to add more contrast to Iron Man.

 »

6} Little light blobs, the come back ! On a new transparent layer and with a soft brush, paint your light and shadow. Set the layer to Soft Light.

 »

7} On a new transparent layer and with a soft brush, I paint the bottom part with a pale orange. I set the layer to Screen.

 »

Sharpen it and that's it!

I hope you understood everything, feel free to ask questions :)
