#015 ~ Tutorial

Jul 20, 2012 14:34

>Hello people ! Here my first coloring in english ever for Ask The Maker activity, I'm nervous, really ^^' kirtash_girl asked a tutorial for three icons, but unfortunately I could recreate only two of them. My lighting/coloring guide is almost finished so I hope I will answer to your questions in this part :).

{1} I always work on a 160x160 canvas, this way you have more space to work with and you don't have to be really precise. But for the sake of the tutorial, I'm going to work on a 100x100. So, start with your base. I don't know why I decided to work with that cap, because I don't like working with dark and night scenes. But after all, why not ? Screecaps are always laking contrast and light (I think), so I always add them. Don't try to make everything good right away, we can always go back to it later. Here : Adjustements / Auto Contrast

»

Curves, add a point :
in : 90
out : 170

»

{2} Time to color ! I always use light textures, but in this case a little differently than usual. I don't use this technique often, but sometimes it makes pretty things, and I liked it here.

Take this texture (by lumsx), rotated it 90° CW, Hue/Saturation (-92 ; -9 ; 0) and then transform it to hide the brightest part. Set the layer to Screen.

»

{3} Same thing for this texture (by lumsx), Hue/Saturation (-133 ; 0 ; 0) and then erase the part on Kahlan. Set the layer to Soft Light.

»
=

{4} Duplicate the base twice and drag them to the top. Set them both to Soft Light, at 100 and 80% opacity.

»

{5} It's really too dark now, add a curves layer (in : 115 and out : 135) and a Gradient, black to white, angle 25° set to Soft Light. I always work with Gradient, they make miracles, literally!

»
»

{6} And then, my favorite part, LIGHTING ! It's a recreation so I didn't archieve the blue part on the left of Kahlan. On a new transparent layer, paint the part with a pale blue and set it to Soft Light.

New layer, with a soft brush add lighting with white and black. If the lights and shadows are too hard, Blur / Gaussian Blur. Set the layer to Soft Light. Always add lighting, it really changes everything.

{7} Finally, add a Contrast layer +34.

This is it!

{1} I couldn't recreate the yellow and the purple I used in the original icon :(. But, this is the same technique, more or less. We are going to work on two separate canvases. Let's begin with the background. This screncap is terribly lacking constrast. Adjustements / Auto Contrast

»

{2} Take this texture (by lumsx) [YES I USE IT EVERYWHERE], rotated it 90° CW and set it to Soft Light.

»

{3} Now, let's color the thing. Apply a Gradient Map #2c1026 to #fdb071.

»

{4} Selective Color:

Magenta : +83 ; 0 ; 0 ; -31
Blacks : 0 ; 0 ; 0 ; +13

»

{5} Add a Gradient #270327 to #dabad5, angle 25° and set it to Soft Light. There is sill not enough contrast, add a Curves layer.

add a point : in 123 ; out 144
move the first point (the bottom left) to in 7 and out 0.

»
»

{6} Take this texture (by innocent_lexys) and reduce it a little. Set it to Screen. Then on a new transparent layer, paint the bottom left corner black with a soft brush. Set it to Soft Light 60% Opacity.

»
»

{7} Now, we are going to work on the second screencap. Adjustements / Auto Contrast. Create a new transparent layer and with a soft brush #7d7c4c, paint to the right and the left of Luna. Set it to Screen.

»
+
=

{8} Curves, add a point: in 114 ; out 146. Take this texture (by lumsx) and past it two times. Transform it to fit the size of the canvas. Set them both to Soft Light. Past this texture (by fuuurs) and transform it too. Set it to Screen

»
»

{9} Duplicate your base and drag it to the top. Set it to Soft Light. Create a new transparent layer and paint with a soft brush shadows and light. We always need more contrast! Set it to Soft Light.

»
+
+
=

{10} Brightness / Contrast - 7 and +37. Finally, Selective Color red : -56, -6, +19, 0.

»

{11} The icon is almost done ! Merge the layers together and past it on the purple screencap. Then take this texture (by ?) reduce it and set it to Screen. I colored it with the colors I wanted, purple and yellow. Erase the part you don't want (here it was on Luna's face).

That's it !
