Planting in the Rainy Season

Oct 06, 2008 01:20

Planted so far:

Two citrus trees (one lime and another something I can't pronounce);

An avocado tree;

A dwarf banana plant;

Three agave plants;

A bunch of flowering stuff (bougainvillea, &tc.);

Four more agave plants, some basil, and a Traveler's Palm are in planters or pots and will be re-planted when they're further along.

Are your agave plants different to the ones they transplanted to south of France? Because if they're the same I can't see that waiting for them to get further along is something that is really worth it. The agaves we have take literally years to change noticeably. In our first year here we had an agave sprout and do the giant asparagus/flower thing. Its offspring (after 7 or 8 years) are still no more than a couple of foot across at most.

I don't know which kind of Agave they are. Perhaps they're Blue Agave and I have tequila in my future.

As for "further along," these are smallish plants that were offshoot from roots (runner?) off of a larger plant; I'm just waiting to be sure I didn't actually kill them before putting them in the ground. I had success with three of these earlier, from the same larger plant (from my neighbor's yard). The thing is the groundskeeping crew tends to run their lawnmower right over them so it takes them awhile to self-repair.
