Conn had spent the morning visiting patients in the infirmary and was just emerging from Ford's room, disquieted. At first, Ford's renewed faith had been encouraging, but then the man had started talking more, calling the wraith 'demons' and those who served them or had fallen under their influence during their imprisonment 'satanists'. Conn had tried to talk to the young lieutenant about true demons, spiritual warfare, about God's power to forgive and reconcile to himself even those who had collaborated with the wraith. Carson nodded his understanding because he too was worried about Ford. "What's your impression?" he asked, honestly wanting to know the other man's opinion.
Conn considered for a moment. "Well, son, I took his sudden religious interest as a good sign at first, but it... It ain't exactly Biblical... or rational. There's a lot of anger and hatred and pain buried under there. He's been through something plum terrible and it's broken him up and scrambled what's left." Conn met Carson's eyes and shook his head. "I'm headin' off to spend some time in prayer because I'm stumped at what else to do."
