Peter left level 9 without hesitation. He didn't need to be told twice that he wasn't needed but he didn't head directly back to the control room. Instead he walked around attempting to get his head together. He had multiple things warring for dominance in his thoughts. His feelings for Elizabeth were, of course, present but he could do nothing but ( Read more... )

Peter watched her out of the corner of his eye. She seemed to relax a little and maybe once she'd eaten, she would catch up on some sleep. He knew she been busy putting out fires and he didn't know if she knew about the latest one. "Hard work increase the appetite," he said as he took a bite of his stew. He noted that it was great comfort food.

"Is there anything, specifically, that you need me to work on this evening?" Peter asked hopefully. He wasn't sure how to bring up his worry without seeming like a gossip and quite truthfully, he didn't intend to go to sleep until he had too. Work would be a great filler.

Elizabeth didn't answer at first, as her mouth was full of stew and she was enjoying it immensely. Knowing that a lot of the vegetables were fresh, and that she'd had a part in its making added to the stew's appeal, and she savored that first mouthful, closing her eyes to enjoy it as completely as possible.

"Surely you've labored enough today Peter," she answered him eventually. "You should relax and take some time for yourself this evening. I think we can all see the results of running yourself too hard, and we can't afford to have anyone else wind up in the infirmary for an extended stay."

Peter looked down at his bowl as Elizabeth suggested his take some time for himself instead of working. He wasn't ready to spend even more time alone and he certainly didn't feel like sleeping. "Well, there are some things that I can work on. Not big things, but still things that need to be done," he said causally, before taking a bite of his stew. It tasted as good as it looked.

After he was done chewing, he said, "I have no intention of returning to the infirmary as a patient any time soon. Although I did think of talking to Carson." Peter hesitated, not wanting to make things worse and certainly not wanting to keep the subject on himself. "Elizabeth, I'm concerned about Rodney and Carson and I think that more headaches are coming this way," he said, before talking a drink of his coffee. The caffeine would be good for him.

"Rodney and Carson?" Elizabeth ran desperately through everything she had heard or noticed recently about the two men, so recently and publicly become lovers, and tried to imagine what might have possibly come between them, if that's what Peter was hinting at.

"Why," she set her spoon down, "Why are you concerned about them?"

Peter wasn't really one to gossip but this issue needed to be discussed. Putting his spoon down, he turned his complete attention to her. "To make a long story short, Rodney believes he has proof that Carson is having an affair. He also thinks that this affair might have been the reason Carson joined the mission. I tried to reason with him but it, of course, did no good," he explained. Peter didn't think it necessary to point out the devastation that could come from this.
