Day 52, Morning; Mainland; Attn: Hunter, Marran (F)

Mitar followed the captain in a southwesterly direction, the Athosian herbalist, Marran, walking beside him. He was making mental note of the trees and bushes even as his eyes scanned the ground for more low-lying plants that might have lived into the winter and the tree branches for the rare aerial-growing or parisitic plant. Mitar allowed himself to be helped up. "My train of thought has been derailed, as you Americans say, but I'm fine otherwise."

Marran reached toward his face, but didn't touch him. "You have a scratch."

Her words made him aware of a slight sting and he touched his cheek and brought his fingers away with a couple spots of blood. "So I have. I may have to go unshaven for a couple of days, then." He glanced around, finally spotting the shelf mushroom a couple feet from where he'd landed. "You have been a great deal of bother," he addressed it. "I hope you are not completely worthless."

"Hey, maybe we'll get lucky and they'll be the ones that make you feel tingly," Hunter said with a grin. He looked at Mitar's scratch and the smile faded slightly. "So you did. You never know what kind of germs are on this planet and the last thing we want is to turn into the plot of a bad science fiction movie."

"Ah, but perhaps the Swamp Thing would be useful to the expedition," Mitar joked as he submitted to the captain's ministrations.

"What is a Swamp Thing?" Marran asked, hovering nearby, a critical eye on Hunter's actions.

Mitar rolled his eyes. "It is a humanoid creature made of plant matter than haunts a swamp in a series of comic books, television shows, and movies. Fiction," he emphasised, in case the Athosian wasn't sure. "Doctor Parrish, who has a fondness for botanical horror films, has the whole run of both television shows and both movies."

"And what are these things-- comic books, television shows, and movies?" Marran asked.

Mitar sighed. At least they wouldn't be lacking for conversational topics.

He chuckled quietly as he put the bandage on Mitar's cut and put the wrapper in another pocket. "Comic books are the cornerstone of Earth society, Marran," he explained. "They tell, through art and the written word, stories about what makes our country great. Or something along those lines. Television shows and movies are pretty much plays everyone can watch without having to go to the theatre."

"What is a theatre?" Marran asked as Mitar placed the shelf fungus into a bag and then into his pack ( ... )
