Day 52, Morning; Mainland; Attn: Hunter, Marran (F)
Mitar followed the captain in a southwesterly direction, the Athosian herbalist, Marran, walking beside him. He was making mental note of the trees and bushes even as his eyes scanned the ground for more low-lying plants that might have lived into the winter and the tree branches for the rare aerial-growing or parisitic plant. "Are the trees much like ones on other worlds in your galaxy?" he asked Marran.
She nodded. "Among the areas on worlds where there are both warm summers and cold winters, these trees are very common. I do not recall seeing many of them among the drawings that Ridley and his mother made of plants from your world."
Mitar shook his head. "Ridley and his mother aren't from a temperate zone. His nation of Zambia is warm year-round, though he claimed it had three seasons-- hot and wet, cooler and dry-- though nothing approaching freezing-- and hot and dry. They mostly drew the plants of their homeland, though they both spent much time in other climes."
"So these trees are common to your world as well?" she asked.
"Many of them are," Mitar answered, and then pointed to a large shelf mushroom on a tree trunk. "I'd like to get a sample of that for Doctor Watson-- Gabriel. Fungus are one of his specialties. Hold up if you could, Captain," he called. He approached the tree and reached up, grunting with the effort, and found himself short, even when he risked his dignity by standing on his toes.
He gazed up at the fungus and hummed thoughtfully.
