Straightening his shoulders and pushing forward his chest, Rodney headed towards the gate room. For a brief moment he had seriously considered ignoring Elizabeth's invitation. ( After all, he was the head of sciences and pretty busy. )
"Of course not," she said, driving the point home. "I'm not military; I can't fight the creatures trying to take the city and kill us. I’m not a scientist; I can't fix the city or keep it going. After everything we've endured over the last few weeks, I have to tell you, I feel pretty damned useless."
Rodney wasn't sure where this was going, but to hear Elizabeth like this made him feel pretty uncomfortable. Maybe she just needed someone to talk to, he wondered, and he was the clueless victim because he was the first to walk in this morning?
He couldn't ask her to talk to Kate Heightmeyer, or would she take it as an insult? Maybe it wasn't too bad he realised that he was -- sort of -- gay, which he was not quite. In fact he only liked Carson and couldn't imagine being with another man but Carson, but this was another matter. Carson was a man, he had a dick and it was easy to deal with Carson. Most of the times. Whereas women were a mystery. Always had been and always would be.
And yes, she was no scientist, which showed. Okay, she had a degree of some sort. In whatever. Nothing that was useful at the very moment though. Diplomacy. Chit-chatting. Now, if she was an engineer, she wouldn't have to feel useless. But she knew that, Rodney thought, of course she knew that. And it would be a little bit tactless to rub it in right now
( ... )
"Well, I am certainly glad to hear that you think so," Elizabeth said, giving up a small smile and struggling to hide the smirk that should have been her natural response to Rodney's clumsy, left handed compliment.
"But at the end of the day," she continued, "all I can really do is coordinate the efforts of the most useful people, like you and Carson and the military." She deliberately avoided mentioning Major Sheppard's name, as she had not missed the conflagration between the two of them yesterday and didn't want to distract Rodney from the point she was slowly forcing him to concede.
A small, satisfied grin played around Rodney's lips when she said that he was the most useful. Of course, he knew he was, but it was nice to hear it once in a while.
He straightened in his chair, and nodded. That was easy, he thought.
"Yeah, well, we do what we can," he said and shrugged his shoulders.
