Jan 25, 2008 17:28

After lunch (and his rather interesting dessert) Carson made his way back to the infirmary. His first stop on his afternoon rounds was Dr. Patel, who'd been brought in yesterday during the Wraith hunt, malnourished and dehydrated.

She'd been found after sixteen days )

Enid had done little but sleep and eat tiny amounts of food since she'd been discovered and brought back to the infirmary yesterday, but each time she woke she'd felt a little more herself. Her mind working at something closer to its full capacity now, she began considering what she'd seen in her journey through the city on her way here, and the damage she could see in the infirmary itself ( ... )

Her chart looked good and he looked up at his patient and smiled. "I'm glad to hear it," he said. He put the PDA back in his pocket and patted her wrist. "Is there anything you need while you're here? I know you've been isolated for quite some time. Can I get you anything to read? Have your friends been by to visit yet?"

Enid tried not to wince at the doctor's words. 'Friends'. If she'd had any, would she have been hiding alone all this time? But it would not do to let him see her bitterness.

"No one has come to visit," she said, sticking with the facts, "but I do not even know who from my department has survived this horror. A computer would do much to alleviate my boredom, however. Is it possible that someone could spare one for me to work on while I am awake?"

Carson noticed her hesitation when he asked if her friends had visited. Like so many others here, he supposed, she must be the type who threw herself into her work to the exclusion of a social life. To get to Atlantis, you had to be more than just competent -- you had to be a workaholic, an uncompromising expert in your field, and that often came at the cost of understanding how to deal with people.

"Oh, aye. I'll make sure to get someone from your department up with a computer for you a bit later this afternoon." He smiled reassuringly. "Now that we've got you on enough food and liquids, you'll be right as rain in no time."

He pulled up a chair and sat next to her. He had at least a few moments he could spend with her before he continued his rounds. "Is there anything you might like from your quarters that I could have someone bring you? After such a terrible time alone during the crisis, perhaps there's something that would offer a wee bit of comfort to you?"

Chuck drifted out of sleep, halfway between alert and dreaming. He skin felt itchy all over, as though it were too tight for his body. In simple terms: he felt like crap.

He felt someone warm snuggled up behind him, and turned his head back just enough to see Traan there, his face slack in deep sleep. Chuck smiled softly. He was speechless -- to have two lovers, two anyone -- friends or otherwise -- who cared for him like Kav and Traan? Not to mention Kia. The few times Chuck had awoken, he was always in someone's arms, or his hand held, or someone curled next to him, fast asleep.

He turned again toward Carson, a feeling of awe-tinged warmth deep in his belly.

"Hi Doctor," he rasped at the doctor, so as not to be rude.
